Shoppers in 10 states should file this away: This weekend, you can pick up clothes and school supplies tax-free.

Sales tax holidays kick off Friday in nine states – Florida, Iowa, Missouri, New Mexico, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas and Virginia – and Maryland's tax holiday begins Sunday.

Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi and Tennessee already held their tax holidays. Maryland and Connecticut will offer tax breaks later in August.

Walmart, Target quit Thanksgiving shopping cold turkey; Black Friday still looms in the

NEW YORK - Forget about rushing out this year on Thanksgiving Day to get a jump on Christmas shopping.

Target is joining Walmart in closing its stores Thanksgiving Day, ending a decade-long tradition of jumpstarting Black Friday door buster sales.

The move, announced July 27, comes as stores are rethinking this year's Black Friday shopping bonanza weekend— along with other key retail days during the holiday season—as the country battles the coronavirus pandemic.

PayPal Data Shows Back-To-School Shopping Upside Down 08/10/2020

The pandemic certainly changed back-to-school buying habits. At least seen through the transactions of PayPal.

Transactions on PayPal Checkout grew nearly 40% year-over-year in Q2 2020, the company reported during an earnings call in late July. Total payment volume grew at 30%, with a record $222 billion processed in the quarter.

Overall transactions grew by 26% to 3.7 billion, consistently equaling the volumes usually experienced during the five days between Thanksgiving and Cyber Monday. June marked the company’s highest growth rate since its separation from eBay in 2015.

Just like the upcoming school year, annual back-to-school shopping is going to look quite different during the coronavirus pandemic.

As schools work out their reopening plans for the fall, parents are working out their back-to-school shopping lists. And some brand new binders and backpacks are not making the cut.

"I do not plan to buy any new things," said Avital Madjar of Woodmere, Long Island, of purchasing new supplies for her elementary, high school, and college-aged children.
