Local businesses recognized for marketplace ethics by BBB - Sandhills Sentinel

A local VA claim consulting firm and a local hardware store were recognized by the Better Business Bureau (BBB) serving Eastern North Carolina.

Veterans Guardian, of Pinehurst, and Burney Hardware, of Aberdeen, were recognized by the 2020 BBB Torch Awards for Marketplace Ethics, according to a Thursday statement from BBB.

Businesses have to “demonstrate a high level of character and ensure the organizations’ practices meet the highest standards of ethics” to be honored.

Habitat for Humanity's ReStore in Danbury seeks to rebrand as multifaceted marketplace

The Housatonic Habitat for Humanity's ReStore – the nonprofit home improvement store and donation center – is on the cusp of an overhaul.

But it's not a matter of rearranging the furniture and slapping a coat of paint on the 11,000-square-foot facility at 51 Austin St. in Danbury. Instead, the organization – which sells its wares at steep discounts to fund affordable housing options in the area – has engaged a New Canaan design and concierge service, DesignDot, to completely redesign, style and curate ReStore's layout.

1.2 million seek unemployment benefits after $600 federal check ends - Marketplace

Nearly 1.2 million laid-off Americans applied for state unemployment benefits last week, evidence that the coronavirus keeps forcing companies to slash jobs just as a critical $600 weekly federal jobless payment has expired.

The Labor Department's report marked the 20th straight week that at least 1 million people have sought jobless aid. Before the pandemic hit hard in March, the number of Americans seeking unemployment checks had never surpassed 700,000 in a week, not even during the Great Recession of 2007-2009. The new jobless claims were down by 249,000 from the previous week after rising for two straight weeks.

Jobs recovery depends on sector of the economy - Marketplace

We got a decent — but not great — economic report Friday to kick off the weekend. The Labor Department told us that employers kept bringing jobs back in July, extending the recovery from the mass layoffs we saw when the COVID-19 pandemic started back in March and April.

The economy added 1.8 million jobs overall in July . The unemployment rate fell to 10.2%. That's a tad higher than the rate’s peak in the Great Recession but a marked improvement from April, when it hit almost 15%.

Vectrix is developing cloud security marketplace built for and by security pros – TechCrunch

“It’s a marketplace of automated security tools that monitor tech and have response capabilities for any security issues that a company may have within their cloud vendors,” Dunbrack explained. He says this could be on GitHub, AWS, G Suite, potentially any cloud service.

The idea is to have security professionals build these modules, then give them a “royalty” and bragging rights for coming up with a viable solution. Dunbrack says it’s not unlike the HackerOne model, which provides a financial incentive and community recognition to find vulnerabilities in code.
