How a permanent shift toward online grocery shopping means less innovation, fewer new brands -

Americans are spending more, yet increasingly they are being offered fewer choices, both online and in person, slowing a years-long trend toward innovations that put "good for you" and "environmentally friendly" spins on established and much-loved products.

The winnowing — what one expert calls a "Sovietish" reduction of choice — is also solidifying eating patterns, for good or for ill. With customers' selections reinforced by online advertising, repeat ordering and other algorithms, the food system is becoming bifurcated as consumers who have expressed enthusiasm for healthful or artisanal foods are offered more of the same, while those with a penchant for highly processed comfort foods are inundated with opportunities to restock.

Publix has reportedly done away with the arrows that directed shoppers on which way they should go down aisles. Employees at the Lakeland, Florida-based chain began pulling up arrow signs and tape over the weekend, the Tampa Bay Times reported.

The measures were enacted during the early days of the coronavirus pandemic to keep shoppers from passing too closely on the aisles. The company has also moved from having employees disinfect carts to offer shoppers disinfecting wipes to do it themselves.

Quite a lot has been going on:

Katrina Dick: Getting out and shopping can be a mood lifter in current conditions | Wc Opinion |

Getting out of the house and into the store can be a mood lifter as well as give you the opportunity to snag a good clothing item at a decent price.

Hello all, I hope your week has been well. Mine has. I actually got out of the house last weekend and went to the mall. I hadn't been to the mall since the middle of February, and it even though I am not a huge fan of going up there, it was still nice to get out and go look around.

I went so that I could check out the $3.25 hand soaps at Bath and Body Works, but once I was finished, I decided to shop around for a bit. Sometimes its nice to just go out and pretend, if only for a little while, that everything is ok and that 2020 isn't a huge dumpster fire that will eventually consume us all.
