Trump backtracks on coronavirus relief talks after calling them off - Marketplace

After President Donald Trump tweeted he’s cutting off negotiations on big pandemic relief funding, saying that will have to wait until after the election, the stock market fell with the Dow dropping 375 points, 1.3%.

This morning stock index futures were up modestly after new tweets last evening find the president calling for piecemeal stimulus , including $1,200 pandemic checks for families to be signed by the president and arrive before election day. So, some whiplash here.

Why are so few Black women married in America? - Marketplace

According to the newest jobs report , over 11% of Black women were unemployed in September, compared to just around 8% of the general population. Last year, Black women earned 62 cents on the dollar compared to white men. The economic racism and sexism that Black women face are reflected in the rate of marriage for Black women. More than 70% of Black women are unmarried, according to the 2010 census.

The weight of financing the phone calls from two inmates, however, demanded that she compromise. When her ex-husband called, she had to pay ten dollars if her daughter spoke with him for ten minutes, basically a dollar per minute.

How one Black tattoo artist is breaking stereotypes - Marketplace

" My Economy " tells the story of the new economic normal through the eyes of people trying to make it, because we know the only numbers that really matter are the ones in your economy.

Debbi Snax, a tattoo and mural artist based in Atlanta, Georgia, has been giving tattoos for nearly eight years. She’s observed that “tattooing in Atlanta is cliquish [and] it’s segregated.”

While she says that the pandemic and the protests over the summer have been opening people's eyes a bit and allowing them to see the lack of representation in tattoo spaces, Snax says there’s often an expectation for Black tattoo artists to specialize in Afrocentric art.

Fears grow as prospects for federal stimulus recede - Marketplace

“Once the [federal unemployment] was gone and our savings vanished, quickly I added $6,000 of credit card debt to my one card,” he said. “It was clear things were deteriorating incredibly fast.”

He's used the credit card to pay for food, mortgage and utilities. His parents, in their 70s, recently had to pitch in.

“I mean, our savings was eviscerated,” he said. “Even with mortgage deferment and lots of plans, you can't stop your spending fast enough.” His husband is a school teacher who is still working. But with only one income, Dancy is nervous about the future.
