Trump tests positive for coronavirus; stocks, oil prices sink - Marketplace

U.S. stock futures and Asian shares fell Friday after President Donald Trump said he and first lady Melania Trump had tested positive for the new coronavirus.

The future contracts for both the S&P 500 and the Dow industrials dropped nearly 2% but were trading 1.2% lower several hours later. Oil prices tumbled about 3%.

Trump tweeted news of his test results just hours after the White House announced that senior aide Hope Hicks had come down with the virus after traveling with the president several times this week.

The Marketplace for Voting Machines Is Heavily Concentrated.

Northampton County, Pa., rolled out new voting machines in November 2019 as part of a $2.9 million contract with the nation's largest commercial vendor of voting technology. Like other states responding to 2016 Russian interference, Pennsylvania was in the late stages of a transition to machines with paper trails. In Northampton, the attraction was a roughly $8,000 all-in-one voting machine with ballot-marking, printing, and vote-counting capabilities.

The new machines failed dramatically . Some reported zero votes for a judicial candidate who was later certified the winner. An election commissioner said a machine recorded a vote without her touching the screen. The machines' paper records allowed an eventual recount, but election night was a fiasco, producing a vote of no confidence in the machines by election officials. The vendor took "full accountability" for what it acknowledged were avoidable human errors in preparing the

COVID-19 sparked a U.S. coin shortage, but a U.K. surplus - Marketplace

A strange thing happened during the coronavirus pandemic: Business and bank closures caused the supply of coins in America to dry up .

In the early days of the pandemic during lockdown, people weren't out shopping so that meant they also weren't spending their money in stores. Later, when the economy reopened, many businesses wouldn't accept cash and instead encouraged customers to pay with a debit or credit card.

This year's fall marketplace is giving back to an organization for children who need help most: The Midland Children's Rehab Center.

"Me and my 3 sons wanted to do something special for Midland Fair Havens, so we put together some baskets for Christmas Eve and invited a couple of friends to come over and they brought some things and we had a jewelry sale and then each year it just kind of got bigger," Bell said.

No-deal Brexit? Yes, it's still possible - Marketplace

The European Union is by far the United Kingdom's largest trading partner.  Last year, the Brits sold 43% of all their exports to the bloc. Meanwhile, more than 50% British imports — $470 billion worth — came from the EU. So spare a thought for the British companies that depend on that trade. They've struggled through the turmoil caused by COVID-19, and now they have Brexit to contend with.

The U.K. formally left the EU at the end of January, but it remains trading freely in the European Single Market until the end of December while it negotiates a new relationship with its former European partners. The talks have not gone smoothly. The two sides have accused each other of foot dragging and bad faith, and the Oct. 15 deadline for a deal is looming. Without an agreement, all kinds of mayhem could unfold.
