How we are shopping this holiday season – and what we are shopping for – has changed, sometimes dramatically, amid the coronavirus pandemic . In 2020, a can of Lysol spray or 12-pack of double rolls might feel like a better score than a Black Friday doorbuster.
Now, the annual holiday shopping pastime coincides with a pandemic that has brought record COVID-19 infections threatening public health and record unemployment undercutting Americans' financial wellbeing.

With more Mainers shopping locally, small businesses see holiday boost
Black Friday deal-seekers can rest after their big dinner on Thanksgiving this year rather than rush out to be first in line when their favorite store opens after midnight on Friday.
"There’s been a silver lining through all of this because even smaller retailers have made some necessary investments in technology to make online shopping easier for their customers," Curtis Picard, president and CEO of the Retail Association of Maine, said.

As many people lacking social contact during coronavirus begin the holiday shopping season, that loneliness could make a difference in their shopping habits.
The more “socially deprived” someone is, the more likely the person is to buy more things, according to research from Jing “Alice” Wang, a marketing professor at the University of Iowa.
Four downtown Kalamazoo retailers who opened in 2020 stress importance of shopping local -
KALAMAZOO, MI -- While the coronavirus pandemic left many small businesses in a pinch, the Kalamazoo Mall saw several new businesses open their doors in 2020.
This holiday season, those new business owners are leaning on one another and paying it forward as they promote shopping local and Small Business Saturday deals for the approaching gift-giving season.
Just a month after opening, Colors & Cocktails: The Mobile Art Party closed down alongside the rest of Michigan's businesses after the stay-at-home order in March. It was a tough start for owner Lauren Lasater, who had just arrived downtown after expanding from her studio space in the Park Trades Center.

The busiest shopping weekend of the year is right around the corner, and Muskegon retailers are working diligently to prepare for incoming shoppers while also adhering to safety guidelines amid a surging coronavirus pandemic.
While Black Friday shopping may look a bit different than usual this year – with mandated mask use, social distancing and limited capacity – Muskegon shoppers can still plan to take advantage of sweet deals at Lakes Mall on Friday, or support local downtown businesses for "Small Business Saturday."
Next-Generation Shopping, 2020 Update - Creating Immersive Experience for Consumers
Satellite images show online shopping's growing footprint - The Verge
You might not see it each time you make a purchase, but online shopping takes up a lot of space in the real world. The number of warehouses built to keep e-commerce running smoothly is growing quickly, and they're creeping closer to neighborhoods in order to meet consumers' expectations for quick deliveries.
These images taken by satellite show how dramatically online shopping has changed the landscape of one county in California. I grew up in this county, and I've seen that transformation happen in person. A lot of the stuff that Americans buy passes through here. The nearby ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach handle about 40 percent of all goods Americans import.
