A Marketplace Without The Madness: These E-Commerce Vets Are Curating Your Favorite Online Brands

The founders of online mattress company Leesa are launching a marketplace with 100 direct-to-consumer brands like Allbirds, Untuckit and S'well.

If it seems like every day you get an Instagram ad for yet another brand you've never heard of, you're not alone.

"Direct-to-consumer brands are springing up left and right. It's getting harder and harder to discern which brands are fly-by-night and which are quality brands driven by a mission," says cofounder Matt Hayes, 37. "We are making it our mission to curate a lot of that."

Small businesses are getting a crash course in e-commerce - Marketplace

Sucharita Kodali: I don’t know that there’s an easy answer to that, unless you go hire an agency to go do that for you. And now increasingly, there’s a presence on Instagram, because Instagram offers Instagram Shops, and Facebook has Facebook Shops. If you’re in apparel, there are companies like Poshmark to put your stuff on. So there are a lot of different players out there to service these small businesses.

Molly Wood: Well, it’s interesting, because we actually just spoke with Intuit, because they’ve added a commerce product to QuickBooks to enable this omnichannel selling. Is that the inevitable outcome of having multiple channels to sell into, each of which has its own fees or management problems? That another player, like a QuickBooks, will come in and say, “Oh, OK, so we need to enable this dashboard”? How long before Salesforce builds a product for this?

Buyouts of Amazon marketplace sellers are booming. Aggregators are scooping up successful small sellers and creating large and lucrative portfolio companies. When Scott Kirby took the helm at United Airlines in May, the country was just eight weeks into the coronavirus pandemic. Kai Ryssdal: Let me toss you the easy softball first, and if you’ll pardon the pun: give me the 30,000-foot view of commercial aviation right now in this economy.
