Fire, floods and other disasters have another side effect: The power goes out. A key theme of adaptation and resilience is actually decentralization. A sort of self-sufficiency, whether that "self" is a house, a business or even a city. And when it comes to energy, it means moving off one big central grid and creating little islands of power in cities, neighborhoods and individual homes.
People are doing it with solar-powered backup systems, even microgrids, little localized power plants that generate, store and distribute power. But the key to any of those systems is the storage part. And where do you store power? Batteries.

Law in the Marketplace: What salary should you pay yourself?
There are presently at least 12,000 New Hampshire businesses whose owners are subject to federal income taxation under Internal Revenue Code Subchapter S. As you will know if you are one of these owners, your LLC or business corporation has to make a proper election in order to be an "S corporation." But if it does so, your share of its income will not be taxable to your company under the Internal Revenue Code, but rather, only to you yourself.
Furthermore, the salary you pay yourself if you are both a shareholder and an employee of your company will be subject not only to federal income tax in your hands but also to a Social Security Tax call FICA. FICA taxes apply at a rate of 15.3% on the first $137,700 and 2.9% on any excess. FICA taxes are split equally between an S corporation's employees and the employees' company.
Small businesses need more PPP support, community banker says - Marketplace

I think there’s still outreach and education to do there, so I’d like to see that first. But I also really worry about businesses that thought they were going to make it and now are really worried they aren’t."
Laurie Stewart: Well, generally speaking, they’re definitely doing better than they would be doing without the funding. I think what’s concerning, of course, to all of them is that in our market, we’re not at stay-at-home [orders], but we’re very close. If you can imagine northwest Washington and restaurants can only have outside dining in December, you know how well that’s going.

Training women in construction — and the employers who hire them - Marketplace
Inside a yellow industrial building behind a Family Dollar store in Morgantown, West Virginia, 13 women were getting a lesson in the basics of plumbing. They all wore masks, sitting at their own tables, and everyone had two sections of plastic tubing — one for hot water, one for cold — to attach to a brass fitting.
"We're going to start with the clinch clamp, which is this tool here," said instructor Larry Hayes.
