Trump criticizes COVID relief bill, demands changes - Marketplace

President Donald Trump released a video Tuesday evening saying the $900 billion COVID relief bill passed by Congress is a “disgrace,” needs to be reconfigured and that $600 per person in direct payments is not enough.

Nancy Marshall-Genzer: Possibly. Now, Trump did not specifically threaten to veto the COVID relief bill. If he were to sign it after all, the checks could go out very soon. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said earlier this week that the money would land in Americans' bank accounts as soon as next week.

How much money do Christmas songs make? - Marketplace

Each year, it seems to start a little earlier. Decorations hit the shelves the day after Halloween. Lights twinkle on houses days before Thanksgiving. Songs about an outcast, red-nosed reindeer and wintery wonderlands blast on supermarket speakers in a loop.

Christmas music is a major component of the season. And with seemingly every artist putting out a Christmas album (Snoop Dogg's " Christmas In The Dogghouse " anyone?), it's clearly a reliable money-maker. After all, the best way to spread holiday cheer is singing loud for all to hear .

Data marketplaces will open new horizons for your company | VentureBeat

The coming years will see a massive business strategy change driven by a radical increase in data accessibility. Companies that leverage data marketplaces early on will be tomorrow's giants.

An early signal of the economic forces data marketplaces bring can be seen in the emergence of Snowflake. Back in September, Snowflake debuted on the public market as the largest software IPO ever, and its performance continues to skyrocket. Some view this as a dark horse, but in reality, this massive dollar amount understates the impact foreshadowed by this record-setting financial debut.

Layoffs still up as 803,000 seek unemployment benefits - Marketplace

The number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits fell by 89,000 last week to a still-elevated 803,000, evidence that the job market remains under stress nine months after the coronavirus outbreak sent the U.S. economy into recession and caused millions of layoffs.

The latest figure, released Wednesday by the Labor Department , shows that many employers are still cutting jobs as the pandemic tightens business restrictions and leads many consumers to stay home. Before the virus struck, applications typically numbered around 225,000 a week before shooting up to 6.9 million in early spring when the virus — and efforts to contain it — flattened the economy. It has since come down but remains at historically high levels.
