Online shopping has shifted recycling responsibilities to consumers - The Verge

The fate of cardboard boxes in the US rests in the hands of consumers more than it ever has been before. In the past, brick-and-mortar retailers handled much of the leftover packaging from shipments. Malls and grocery stores usually send big bales of used but relatively clean cardboard to recycling programs so that they can be made into new boxes.

The pandemic has only accelerated this shift, which experts expect to continue even after COVID-19 is under control. One of the largest waste collection companies in the US, Republic Services, saw as much as a 25 percent increase in waste it picked up from households last year — after the volume it picked up from commercial customers dropped by up to 30 percent when pandemic-induced lockdowns began.

Apple AR ambitions could expand Personal Shopping and tech support sessions | AppleInsider

Using Apple AR hardware, future Apple Store Personal Shoppers could demonstrate devices to users, and show the products interactively within the customer's home.

Apple already uses AR to preview new devices , such as letting a prospective Mac Pro user see just how big that machine will be on their desk . Even Apple doesn't do it for every device, though, and new research about personal shopping suggests that it intends to.

"[However, online] shopping can lack the instantaneous feedback, answers to questions, suggestions, demonstrations of products, and human connection of an in-person shopping experience," they say. "Additionally, the user is unable to fully interact with the online representation of the product and, therefore, cannot truly experience a full demonstration of the product while in a remote environment."

Internet Privacy: Online Shopping Browsing History & Ads

We all probably did a lot more online shopping this year during the pandemic than ever before. After online shopping, you will notice that pop-up ads are constant, and continue to pop up even if you continue to "x" them out. Or you might check the weather, and find that the site you access knows exactly which town and state you are in.

China's internet regulator weighs tighter curbs on payment, shopping platforms | Reuters

For the first time, the Cyberspace Administration of China defined "internet information services" within its purview to include offerings by such platforms, as well as those of news information providers and search engines.

The move would "promote the healthy and orderly development of Internet information services," it said on its official WeChat account.

It would protect the rights and interests of citizens and organisations and safeguard national security and public interests, the regulator added.
