With most of us stuck at home these days, we're using e-transfers more than ever before. Interac says they hit an all-time high in December, with over 77 million transactions. But there's a flip side to all those e-transfers. Last year, there was a significant increase in fraudulent transactions.

In Ontario, Peel Region wants people exposed to COVID-19 to isolate away from home if possible — and they'll foot the bill. With transportation to the facility available in a specially sealed mini-bus, 24-hour on-site nursing staff, temperature checks, security, and meals delivered right to the door, the region is trying to remove any inconvenience, fear or stigma from the isolation process. But as Marketplace's David Common reports, returning travellers need not apply. Read more

Local black-owned businesses host marketplace event and black history program in College Station
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) - Culturally Rooted Enterprise brought black-owned businesses together from across the Brazos Valley Saturday for what they call a "Ujamma Marketplace." At the marketplace, people had the opportunity to shop from various vendors and attend a Black History program.
Event organizers said the purpose of the event was to bring more awareness to minority-owned businesses by having them all in the same location.
The event was organized by Culturally Rooted Enterprise , an organization created due to the lack of black-owned businesses in the Bryan-College Station area.
Law in the Marketplace: Tips for joint tenants
Question. My husband and I own as joint tenants both our own home and a small commercial real estate office building. My husband manages the office building: Among other things, he finds new tenants for it, he signs leases, he maintains the building, and in the winter, he deals with snow and ice around it. From a legal and tax viewpoint, are our arrangements concerning the office building reasonable?

-- The problem when married joint tenants engage in the business of renting real estate to third-party tenants is this: Lawyers for a plaintiff with a claim relating to the real estate — e.g., a serious slip-and-fall — will almost certainly argue that, whether they know it or not, the joint tenants are, as a matter of New Hampshire statutory law operating a real estate rental business as a state-law partnership.

What percentage of products on Amazon are sold by marketplace sellers?
Amazon.com Inc. continues to strengthen its dominance in U.S. ecommerce thanks in large part to its third-party marketplace sellers. Sales from Amazon’s marketplace account for roughly 60% of its total gross merchandise value, Digital Commerce 360 estimates. In Q4 2020, marketplace merchants accounted for 55% of units sold on Amazon.com, according to the retail giant. That’s up from 54% in the same quarter of 2019 and 47% five years earlier in 2015. Vivino raises $155 million for wine recommendation and marketplace app – TechCrunch
If you’re at all interested in wine, chances are you’ve turned to Vivino at least a few times for recommendations. The app and the company behind it have been helping people enjoy better wine since 2010, and now the startup has raised $155 million with its Series D round — a sum over twice as large as all of its previous funding to date.
Vivino is an interesting company for many reasons, but chief among them might be just how similar its vision today is to the one it started out with. Founder and CEO Heini Zachariassen told me in an interview that the app has been remarkably immune to the pivot — something as natural as breathing in the fast-flowing startup world.
The "afterlife" of mass incarceration - Marketplace
Last week, President Joe Biden directed the Justice Department to end its relationship with private prisons. In remarks before signing the executive order, he called it a first step in his administration's plan to address "systemic problems in our criminal justice system."
That Moore was tried in the courthouse he helped to fill reveals much about American so-called race relations and the uneven administration of what we've misrecognized as justice. The word justice suggests some harm repaired or some truth revealed, but 95 percent of all court cases end in a plea deal after a person has spent anywhere from several weeks to several years in a cage.
