This Black History Month, Atwood Magazine has invited artists to participate in a series of essays, interviews, reviews, poetry, playlists, and more features in recognition of, and out of respect for the symbolism and significance of this month.
The important legacy of the Bay Area sound is that there was no sound. The sound was what the artists decided it should be. From Sly Stone, Metallica, Digital Underground, E-40, Too Short, MC Hammer, Tower of Power, Taj Mahal, Tony! Toni! Toné!, to the Dead Kennedys. The creative arts have such a vast and diverse history here in the Bay Area. I hope that Storefront Records will continue in the legacy of that excellent tradition.

New project adds ‘surreal, kinetic light installation’ to Pike/Pine’s
Two Seattle artists are adding new light to the collection of heartfelt art and plywood murals that have covered the windows of many restaurants and shops of Capitol Hill and Pike/Pine during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and through months of protest and unrest.
Heliogram.01 , “a surreal, kinetic light installation and glowing beacon of hope” installation, now cycles every four minutes along 10th Ave in the window of a closed-down retailer. It activates nightly at sundown at 5:30 PM and loops until the morning.
Oh yes, O'MACARON now has a storefront downtown
While macarons are traditionally French, you don’t need to jump on a plane to get your hands on this soft and chewy pastry. You can get them in downtown Midland at O’MACARON’s newly opened storefront, next to Crepes Et Amis on Townsend Street — if they haven’t run out yet.
“It was amazing,” says O’Mara. “It was unlikely anything I could have anticipated or expected.”
There are 19 flavors on the menu right now. Their most popular flavors are lemon, birthday cake, white chocolate raspberry, vanilla, cinnamon toast crunch, and oreo.

It's not too late. Ice sculptures are on display throughout downtown Lake Geneva. They were placed outside businesses for Winterfest, but with cold temperatures lingering they will be around for a while. The ice sculptures were created by Art Below Zero in Franksville.
Avant Cycle Cafe featured an ice sculpture depicting a mug of coffee or hot beverage outside of its storefront as part of the Downtown Ice Sculpture Walk, which was part of the Winterfest activities. Avant sold Winterfest memorabilia and snack items outside of its business.

Retail pot storefront gets special permit to open on Mountain Street East
The Planning Board Wednesday granted a special permit for a retail marijuana storefront on Mountain Street East.
The board unanimously approved the special permit for Munro Associates LLC at 15-17 Mountain Street East, at the corner of Burncoat Street in the city's Summit neighborhood.
The establishment will be Munro's second local storefront; the company recently opened The Vault in Webster.
Joshua Lee Smith, a lawyer with the Bowditch & Dewey firm in Worcester representing Munro on the application, said the operation plans to have a total of 45 employees, with 10 to 13 employees on shift at any point in time. The business requires seven parking spaces, but the small strip mall where the marijuana retailer will be located has 28 overall spaces.
Lake Geneva ice sculpture damaged, police report filed | Crime & Courts | lakegenevanews.net
LAKE GENEVA – A police report has been filed after one of the downtown Lake Geneva ice sculptures was damaged.
An ice sculpture of a dapper looking gentleman with a top hat was in front of the Habberdapper, 253 Broad St. It was there as part of the ice sculpture walk throughout downtown that coincided with Winterfest.
"We pay for these and to have someone vandalize them after we paid a lot of money for these things, that is not right," said Jeff Schoo, owner of Lake Geneva Spice Company, whose business is next to the Habberdapper.
