Walmart Marketplace grew to an estimated 70,000 sellers in 2020, fueled by a surge in online shopping due to the Covid-19 pandemic and a series of investments in technology and vendor relationships reported here for the first time.

That is expected to rise 146% by the end of 2022, according to projections by data firm Marketplace Pulse that have not yet been published.

La Cocina Responds to Claims of 'Gentrification Hell' on Social Media - Eater SF

La Cocina Municipal Marketplace opened at the beginning of April after years in the making, giving BIPOC female entrepreneurs the chance to operate their small businesses in the heart of downtown San Francisco. Six businesses are currently operating out of the Tenderloin space, with a seventh slated to join, offering everything from Nepalese momos to Algerian stew.

Still, not everyone is on board with the mission. When a Twitter commenter questioned the $16 price tag on a plate of four tacos from a La Cocina vendor, asking "What kind of gentrification hell is this?" the non-profit clapped back in the best way.

A year ago, when most of the country was under stay-at-home orders and people were losing jobs at an unprecedented rate, we asked three people who study economic history to explain whether the recession on the horizon was going to look anything like the Great Depression.

With the vaccine rollout well underway, weekly unemployment claims at their lowest level since the pandemic began and consumer confidence rising, we've asked them about a different historical comparison: the 1920s.

Facebook Marketplace disrupts classifieds ads landscape

Internet giant Facebook launched its own marketplace in 2016, and has majorly disrupted the online classified ads space over the following five years. A new study suggests that while the company's customer base and extensive partner network give it the upper hand in most cases, however, some organisations have still been able to outmanoeuvre the social media behemoth.

In 2007, Facebook introduced its first Facebook Marketplace functionality, allowing users to post classified ads within sale, housing, and jobs categories. The feature never gained traction, and in 2009, control was transferred to Oodle, the platform powering the functionality – before eventually folding in 2014.

The Kaiser Family Foundation reports that the share of Americans who want a COVID-19 shot right away, or have already been vaccinated, has nearly doubled to over 60% since December.
