When the coronavirus pandemic swept the U.S. last spring, Community Foods Market in Oakland, California, turned to free delivery to encourage seniors to shop online.
"Even though we were doing kind of everything to keep our store clean and sanitized daily and limit traffic coming into the store, I just was not that comfortable with the idea of encouraging seniors to come out at what was the peak of the first [COVID-19] surge," said Brahm Ahmadi, CEO and president of the store.

Retail giant Walmart is doing away with some of its automated technology that was designed to make the online ordering and pickup process easier for customers, The Wall Street Journal reported on Monday.
The retailer is shifting away from using its pickup towers, which allowed customers who ordered online to scan a barcode on their mobile phones in order to have their items automatically dispensed within seconds.

- Anta Sports Products said on April 20 that its controlling shareholder, Anta International Group, has planned a sale of about 3.3% stake in the company at a 7.5% discount to the previous day's close, for HK$11.6 billion ($1.5 billion).
- The placement will reduce Anta International's direct stake to 47.6% from 50.1%. It holds an indirect 10.2% stake through two subsidiaries.
- Anta Sports said it did not expect the share sale to have any significant impact on its daily operations or any change to its key management personnel.
Gun fired during robbery inside Macy's at Concord's Sun Valley Shopping Center – East Bay
Security personnel at a Macy's store inside the Sun Valley Shopping Center escaped injury after police said a man fired a gun while trying to steal cologne from the store last week.
According to police, the man entered the store on April 16 and at about 7 p.m. filled a bag he was carrying with more than $1,400 worth of cologne. Police said he then left the store, and store security personnel tried to stop him.
Police said the suspect grabbed a gun from his pocket and that one shot was fired. Nobody was injured.
Ten youngsters surprised with shopping spree at local sporting goods store
WACO, Texas (KWTX) - Ten youngsters chosen from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Waco were each $200 to spend at Waco's Academy Sports + Outdoors store.
The shopping spree came as a surprise to club Director James Jarmon who said he got a call "out of the blue" that the local sporting goods store wanted to help.
"(The caller) said, 'Hey, we want to bring 10 kids and they'll get $200 apiece and we'll just let them have a shopping spree," Jarmon said.
