Akron's redone Bowery District is looking to generate buzz as the weather warms up and pandemic restrictions are lifted.
But the empty Bowery District storefronts soon will be getting filled up by Curated Storefront, the local nonprofit organization that designs and installs public art installations in unused spaces in downtown Akron.
"We recognize the regenerative potential of visual arts to bring people downtown and add to the development of a thriving culture in downtown Akron," Don Taylor, majority partner of Bowery Development Group, said in a news release. Taylor is head of Welty Building Co.
How trash talking on a Virginia storefront sign led to a friendly fight across the U.S.
"Hey Super Shoes! Wanna start a sign war?" wrote Jim Bohon, a music instructor at Bridge Kaldro Music in Christiansburg, Va., on the store's marquee on April 16.
Bohon said there wasn't a real reason for the message other than that he wanted to stir up some fun in the town of just over 22,000 residents.
"I just thought it would be kind of cool to have a nice back and forth with the neighbors," Bohon, 29, said, adding that the two stores have always had a friendly relationship. Still, "I honestly didn't even know if Super Shoes was going to respond."

Vacant St. Cloud storefront could become Sierra Trading Post - StarTribune.com
An outdoor recreation gear and apparel store is on track to move into the former Ulta Beauty storefront on the west side of St. Cloud.
The Cheyenne, Wyo.-based Sierra Trading Post applied for a permit to remodel the space at 3959 2nd St. S. in December. The city issued the permit in February.
A spokesperson for Sierra Trading Post did not confirm a retail store would be coming to St. Cloud, stating via e-mail, "When opening new stores, we tend to announce our plans when we believe the time is right to do so competitively. Generally speaking, it is our practice not to announce store openings until close to an intended opening date."
The M's storefront window displays, including 'Outer Experiences,' will continue through 2021
May 22—The Minnesota Museum of American Art, the M in downtown St. Paul, announced last week it will continue to display exhibits in its storefront windows at Fourth and Robert streets. The indoor space will remain closed.
The window galleries were introduced as a way to continue exhibitions when the COVID-19 pandemic shut down public spaces. The M initially had plans to reopen the museum galleries in June. Now the M plans to continue to exhibit work in its window galleries, the skyway, virtually and at partner locations while it starts work on the final phase of the M's building, according to a news release.

Akron guests to step into 'World of Wonders' by eccentric ceramicist
Akron folks will party with robots, demon dogs and even Bigfoot's skeleton Thursday at the opening extravaganza for "Clayton Bailey's World of Wonders" downtown.
The free exhibit, installed by Curated Storefront in the Landmark Building at Main and Bowery streets, was created as an immersive experience for guests to enter the wild, warped mind of Bailey, a ceramicist and prankster known for his eccentric creations.
As you enter the show, you encounter a demon dog named Screamin' Demon, a ceramic creature that lights up and makes a wild noise. Smaller comically ferocious demon dogs, now part of the 100-piece exhibit in Akron, formerly sat on fence posts like gargoyles around Bailey's property in Port Costa, California.

Pack & Send Plus, a longtime workhorse for Waterbury-based small businesses, artists, and snail-mail enthusiasts alike, is approaching the end of an era as owner and founder Darrick Pitstick looks to sell the business in the coming months.
Pitstick launched the business 13 years ago with the help of his partner, Richard Drill, after they left their previous profession in Stowe and faced an uncertain future. "We had been inn-keeping in Stowe for seven and a half years and one day we found ourselves unemployed and homeless," Pitstick said.
Art review: Clayton Bailey's work is another world
The local arts organization Curated Storefront is about to launch its largest venture yet. with "Clayton Bailey's World of Wonders" in the Landmark Building in downtown Akron.
Wandering through the exhibit space and taking the time to commune with the artist's work, it's striking how familiar the pieces feel. If you have ever driven across the country and seen a roadside attraction or stood in line at the grocery store and looked at the fantasy world of tabloid news, you will quickly feel at home with Bailey's work.
