FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Southland Shopping Center on State Road 84 has been mostly closed until further notice after the ceiling in front of Bealls Outlet caved in and came crashing down Thursday.
Some of the overhang areas are unstable, so they are removing them all, starting at Winn-Dixie and working outward. That supermarket is expected to reopen to customers Friday evening.
"They've seen what looks like some water damage and possibly some termite damage as well," said Mike Jachles, a spokesman for the city of Fort Lauderdale. "This structure is probably 50 or more years old, so over time, there is deterioration. ... And this is not something you can see with the naked eye."
$1.5 million remodeling project planned for Newburgh shopping plaza
Developers say they’re looking to bring new businesses in to the shopping center off State Road 261. They plan to resurface the building and redo the parking lot with more than $1.5 million going into the project.

A 21-year-old man was shot during an exchange of gunfire late Thursday afternoon in a Brentwood shopping center parking lot, police said.
Brentwood police determined two shooters in two separate vehicles had exchanged gunfire. The vehicles involved were described as a silver-colored sedan, associated with man who was shot, and a black-colored sedan that was driven away. The suspects in the dark-colored sedan were described as light-skinned, black or Hispanic males, police said.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A Fort Lauderdale shopping center was closed for further inspection Thursday after a partial ceiling collapse.
Around 10 a.m., heavy stucco came down at the front entrance of the Bealls Outlet store in the Southland Shopping Center on State Road 84, about a mile east of I-95.
"I heard the big boom and the crash and they said no one can exit through the door here," said Ted Inserra, who watched the whole thing happen. He said he and his dog Lillie are regulars at this mall.
