Shopping small in the Poconos | wnep.com

EFFORT, Pa. — A pre-Black Friday shopping event on Saturday encouraged people to shop small this holiday season.

"Small businesses, as you guys know, got hit over the whole COVID, and this is a way for us to keep roofs over our heads, and you know take care of our families, so we need support you know so we need to do these things to keep afloat," said organizer Carol Seales.

Experts: Start holiday shopping on Black Friday — or even earlier

In the meantime, how should you schedule your shopping? As stores large and small have continued to adjust throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, some previously held truths about Black Friday have changed — perhaps for good.

Gone, it seems, are the days when box stores fought to open earliest on Thanksgiving. This year, nearly every chain from Target to Home Depot to Walmart is closed on Thursday, Nov. 25. Black Friday hours will begin, on average, between 5 a.m. and 7 a.m. on Friday.

November is upon us and the season for shopping

It's now the time of year I call Halloween's Epilogue, that magical time when temperatures drop, bargain shoppers force their way into stores and everyone marvels, "I can't believe it's November!"

I face this season, for the first time, with a bit of smugness. I read all the headlines about retail inventory shortages, and I heard fellow parents fret they may not be able to get the latest and greatest Marvel Movie Action Figure with the Kung Fu Grip.
