High above WG Marketplace's lobby is a list of its values, including hope, relationship, redemption and human dignity. While a prominent display of values might not be expected in a thrift store, they are the guiding principles behind Watered Gardens' newest ministry.
The 7,500-square-foot store, 220 W. Second St., is in a remodeled space across from a former bus station.
Travis Hurley, advancement director for Watered Gardens, said the store, which has been two years in the making, is based on a model several other homeless shelter ministries are using across the country. The store will not only help support Watered Gardens' ministries but will also give its residents employment opportunities.
WG Marketplace is similar to a DAV or Red Racks thrift store, he said. It's open to the public, and proceeds offset the costs of the ministries at Watered Gardens. Those include the outreach center, overnight shelter, the Washington Hope Family Center and the Forge.
Hurley noted the store is different from the Garden Exchange, which is a thrift store in Watered Gardens' workshop designed for people who are struggling with poverty and homelessness.
The internship will give them real-world experience in preparation for full-time employment. The ministry hopes to hire people coming out of the shelter at the store in addition to the internships.
