Data Drop: eCommerce Numbers Steal Relevance | PYMNTS.com

Is the retail industry looking at the wrong numbers? It could be. While last week's 16 percent overall spending drop lit up the headlines and scored high on the drama factor, it's the eCommerce numbers – up 8.4 percent during the same period – that could hold the most importance for the future.

"As predicted, retail sales were bad in April and lower than in March," noted National Retail Federation (NRF) Chief Economist Jack Kleinhenz. "This should come as no surprise, since April was the first full month when most businesses not considered essential were closed, both in retail and across the economy. But month-to-month comparisons provide little insight other than indicating that most of the economy was on lockdown.

Furniture Ecommerce Back To Business With Work-From-Home Surge

Supply chain and logistics have been one of the biggest pain point for the segment rather than customer sentiment

As the government slowly opens up the economy, all "non-essential" businesses are also beginning to come back on track. The furniture ecommerce industry, which was shelved as it didn't fit into the essential category is making the best of the prevailing circumstances.

The work-from-home norm seems to have spurred the segment. So much so that the impact of the lockdown is limited compared to the other ecommerce ventures like apparel and clothing. Pepperfry cofounder and COO Ashish Shah told Inc42 that the company has managed to recover 60-65% of the sale volume it was catering to in March 2020, before the nationwide lockdown was announced. However, the average order value has remained the same.

Will New Ecommerce Sellers Squeeze Existing Merchants? | Practical Ecommerce

The coronavirus pandemic has forced some brick-and-mortar businesses to focus on ecommerce, but this shift in focus is not likely to stop many permanent closures.

“If this isn’t the retail apocalypse, I don’t know what would be,” said Sarah Wyeth, the lead analyst for retail and restaurants at S&P Global Ratings, according to a Wall Street Journal article on May 14, 2020.

Wyeth has estimated that 19 large retail businesses are a coin toss away from going out of business because of mandatory shutdowns and Covid-19’s overall economic impact.

Italy’s Commerce Layer raises $6M led by Benchmark for its headless e-commerce platform

In the world of commerce, the last few months have underscored the fact that every retailer, brand and entity that sells or distributes something needs to have a digital strategy. Today, one of the startups that’s built a platform aimed at giving them more control in that process is announcing a Series A to continue expanding its business.

Summer School 2020: A glossary of analytics terms - Big Blue View

"Stats," "data," and "analytics" have become the hot new buzzwords around the NFL, and in doing so have also become a hotly debated subject with regards to football. For some, "analytics" is a way to make sense of the chaos and complexity that make up the game of football. For others it is an invasion of pencil-necked geekery into a world in which nerds have no place.

The coverage and fandom of the New York Giants is one of those places where the debate over analytics rages — and all too often devolves into flame wars. The Giants have struggled with implementing a large-scale analytics operation, while other teams like the the New England Patriots , Baltimore Ravens , and Philadelphia have embraced analytics whole-heartedly.

Using Data Analytics for Effective Food Waste Management | Analytics Experts at Quantzig Offer

According to Quantzig's data analytics experts, "Data analytics can help retailers to identify seasonal changes in consumer demand for food products and plan what quantity of a particular food item must be produced or procured, consequently leading to better food waste management."

The scale of the global food waste problem is increasing at an astonishing rate. As a result, food waste management is now a matter of global concern. According to recent estimates, roughly one-third of the food produced in the world for human consumption every year — approximately 1.3 billion tons — gets wasted. This contributes to the emission of greenhouse gases at landfills and also increases the wastage of water that is used to grow food crops that are ultimately wasted.

Vanderbilt University Medical Center deployed predictive analytics to forecast the number and timing of expected surgeries so fewer staffers are on the clock during slow periods. New Trump Campaign Ad: Making America Great Again, Again? 05/12/2020

For the week of May 2 through May 8, Advertising Analytics says the commercial had 1,737 airings. The week before, the Trump campaign spent $1.8 million from April 26 through May 2. A few quick questions: Where is that story written, who was the author, and did anyone do the fact-checking?

Pardon me -- this is advertising. That aside, the attempt is a promise that advertising can be aspirational. Pulitzer Prize potential? No.

It's a hodgepodge of clips from the press, starting off with an initial one-minute spot, where the words “attack,” “mocked” and “torn up,”  appear. The latter features House Speaker’s Nancy Pelosi famously ripping up a Trump State of the Union speech.

Why leaders look to infrastructure spending in recessions - Marketplace

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Wednesday called for major infrastructure spending in the New York City area as a way to jump start the region's economy, which has been badly battered by the COVID-19 pandemic. Cuomo asked President Donald Trump to approve projects that would build a train to LaGuardia airport, expand the Second Avenue Subway and build a second set of tunnels under the Hudson River.

It's not the first time leaders have turned to big infrastructure projects to spur growth during an economic downturn. During the Great Depression, the government employed millions of Americans through New Deal programs like the Works Progress Administration and the Public Works Administration that built roads, bridges and dams still around today.

Shopping malls won’t be allowed to open, many types of salons will stay closed through

Even before Governor Andrew Cuomo held his press conference on Friday – it became clear during the morning hours what would- and would not be allowed to reopen in ‘Phase 2’.

This phase, which the Finger Lakes and Central New York were viewed as being ready to enter on Friday – was expected to allow a number of venues that previously had not been opened to begin operation.

Shopping malls had been preparing for the last two weeks to reopen when region’s hit the second phase of opening, but guidelines issued Friday morning deemed them non-essential. Stores inside malls could reopen at 50% capacity, but the common spaces – the ways patrons get around – were to remain closed through phase two.

"It's a strange feeling," said Christine Clymer, who shared an early lunch with her sister, mother and daughter on the patio of Quigley's Irish Pub in Naperville. "You know you're allowed to be doing this, but it's still an odd sensation. It doesn't feel normal yet."

Bozica "Betty" Kosanovic understands those risks, so she spent the past several days cleaning, sanitizing and reconfiguring areas of her small Elmhurst salon to maximize social distancing. Though she was required to do so by law, Kosanovic made the effort because of her clients, the longtime patrons who helped sustain her during the shutdown with prepaid appointments, donations and encouraging words that they would be back in her chair before long.

The salad bar, the soup bar, the olive bar. The free samples. The leisurely time spent strolling through the produce section, touching avocados to check whether they're fresh.

All of that's vanished during the coronavirus pandemic, which has turned a trip to the grocery store into a monumentally stressful experience for many shoppers.

2 Ways To Win With Curbside Customer Experience

Curbside pickup is a win-win situation: stores can stay in business and provide work for employees, and customers can continue to get the items they need. By keeping customers out of the store, both sides decrease their exposure to others and limit the spread of the coronavirus.

But just because curbside pickup benefits stores and customers doesn't mean it is automatically successful. In order to maintain strong relationships with customers, stores must focus on customer experience, even during a pandemic.
