Under new leadership, Dwell is betting on its marketplace and membership models - Digiday

Dwell’s new CEO, Zach Klein, expects his shelter publication to earn most of its revenue from digital sources by the end of this year. And he’s relying on the company’s new membership model, affiliate business and real estate marketplace.

Two other business activities bring in 10% of the company’s revenue: The Dwell Shop, an e-commerce site launched by the publisher at the end of 2017, and a real estate and vacation-rental marketplace.

bne IntelliNews - Russian VTB Bank launches online car marketplace

Russia's second-largest bank VTB Bank  has launched an online car marketplace in partnership with ILSA, an aggregator of 871 official dealers in 71 Russian cities.

BCS Global Markets comments that other banks are also interested in such a service, with Sberbank and TCS Group aiming to launch a marketplace for new and used cars this year. Sovcombank (Russia's 13th largest bank) already operates a similar marketplace.

"The new service may save some costs, decreasing the bank's physical presence at dealerships, albeit we expect no significant impact in the short term," BCS GM commented, seeing the news as neutral for VTB.

Behringer's parent company Music Tribe launches a free-to-use gear marketplace - Guitar.com | All

Towards the end of last year, Behringer 's parent company Music Tribe took to YouTube to preview an online music marketplace , with a video simply titled "Buy and Sell. For Free. Soon". This was recently followed by a more in-depth video titled "The Perfect Place to Sell Your Musical Gear", with clips of a variety of audio gear that you will be able to sell on this new marketplace.

The marketplace could prove to be a direct competitor to Reverb.com and eBay, with no fees for posting and selling your items on the platform. As the store has been launched so recently, there aren't many listings at present – but that could certainly change as those looking to offload some gear can now do so for free.

Can robotic harvesting help a post-Brexit labor shortage? - Marketplace

As it turns out, there are jobs where a human touch is — or has been — irreplaceable. Fruit picking is like that. Soft, delicate fruits must be assessed for ripeness and then gently plucked without smooshing. But in Britain, where one likely effect of Brexit will be a shortage of cheap human labor, there’s a flurry of interest in robots that can do the job.

Stephen Beard: This is definitely very difficult territory for robotics. These aren’t repetitive movements in a highly structured environment as you would get in a car plant. The environment with fruit growing is very unstructured. The robots have got to find the fruit through a mass of leaves, so it needs stereoscopic cameras to give it a 3D image. It assesses the ripeness of the fruit by measuring its wavelength on the visible spectrum.

Super Bowl slacking off is bad for business. Employers are adapting. - Marketplace

There's a phenomenon today some call “Super Bowl absenteeism." Blame the chili, blame the beer, blame the letdown after all the big game excitement.

HR outfit Kronos estimates that more than 17 million workers may be taking the day after the game off. That's the highest number since Kronos started tracking this in 2005. And there are signs that employers are adapting. (Note: Kronos is an underwriter of “Marketplace.”)

Employers know productivity drops the day after the Super Bowl. And one reason is because most workers asked for the day off in advance.

Emerge scores $20M to expand digital freight marketplace - FreightWaves

Emerge, a Scottsdale, Arizona-based digital freight marketplace, announced Tuesday it has closed a $20 million Series A financing led by NewRoad Capital Partners, a growth equity capital firm based in Rogers, Arkansas.

With the latest round of funding, the company plans to expand its development, operations and enterprise sales teams and is expected to move into its new 36,000-square-foot headquarters in Scottsdale in March 2020.

Emerge's freight logistics platform is basically a transportation management system (TMS) with an attached marketplace. Shippers can put their vendors on the platform, but that private network is also hooked up to a larger marketplace, allowing participants to share excess capacity.

Law in the Marketplace: Tips when starting up

Today, I'm resuming "Law in the Marketplace," a business-focused column I wrote for the Monitor in the 1990s.

If you have business or tax questions you'd like me to address in this monthly column, call me at (603) 856-7172 or e-mail lawjmc@comcast.net. But please be aware that my goal with this column is not to provide legal advice. Instead, my goal is to give readers a better understanding of an often complex business landscape.

I'll be writing this column in a Q&A format, so I'd love to hear from Monitor readers. Otherwise, I'll be framing the column with questions I often hear from my clients.
