In London's lockdown, a honey shop navigates online sales - Marketplace

Home to fresh and artisan foods, Borough Market is one of London’s oldest food destinations. Typically bustling with shoppers, the market’s essential grocers are open even as the United Kingdom remains under lockdown to stem the outbreak of the novel coronavirus.

The “Marketplace” team visited Borough Market last year while reporting on the economic concerns of Brexit. That’s when we met Samantha Wallace, owner of From Field and Flower , a specialty shop that sells a variety of international honey products. Wallace has decided to close the small shop, focusing on online sales. We asked her about managing a business during the global pandemic and her thoughts on the future of retail.

Quite a lot has been going on:

Can Amazon weed out marketplace fraudsters via video chat? – RetailWire

Amazon.com was moving to address the perennial problem of fraud on its third-party marketplace when the coronavirus pandemic erupted. Now, it's implementing a solution it hopes will help significantly cut down on bootleg sellers while remaining consistent with guidelines for social distancing.

Early this year, Amazon introduced a program that involved in-person verification of third-party marketplace sellers, according to TheStreet . Due to the need to reduce person-to-person contact due to the pandemic, however, the e-tailing titan quickly shifted to verifying seller identities with video calls.

What does Trump's order on meat processing plants mean?- Marketplace

President Donald Trump is invoking his special authority under the Defense Production Act to keep meat processing plants open . Some plants closed after becoming hot spots for COVID-19 infections.

Here’s what the president’s order does: It prevents local authorities from closing meat processing plants in their communities because of COVID-19 infections, as long as those plants are following federal safety guidelines.

If plant operators are in fact making a good faith effort to follow the guidelines, then the government may stand by them if they're sued by workers for exposure to the COVID-19.

In case you are keeping track:

Shopify's Almost-Marketplace Called Shop - Marketplace Pulse

Shopify launched a consumer shopping app, called Shop, on Tuesday. The app is both a glimpse of what a marketplace built of Shopify stores would look like, and an underwhelming first take at appealing to consumers. It does little to drive product discovery for brands on Shopify.

The app is updated and rebranded Arrive, an app built by Shopify for tracking packages. It includes those same tracking capabilities, but it also allows consumers to follow individual Shopify stores and get product recommendations.

"COVID-19" Thermal Cameras Start to Hit the Marketplace -- Security Today

As video surveillance companies look to recover lost revenue, temperature detection capabilities have become a hot commodity.

Elevated body temperature detection cameras are hitting the market like a Texas tornado, and the market for “COVID-19” may be worth billions of dollars this year. It is certainly the fastest growing segment in the security industry today.

So, what happens when the pandemic is over, provided it does end this year? Currently, the physical products that we all know, such as video surveillance cameras, are on a somewhat downward spiral, meaning there is a downward sales pressure on camera manufacturers.

Will COVID-19 end open plan offices, useless meetings, and handshakes? - Marketplace

As April comes to an end, after weeks of social distancing rules in effect, various states have began rolling out plans to slowly ease up COVID-19 related restrictions. The guidelines introduced by the White House earlier in April split reopening into three phases, with the first phase calling for employers to continue to encourage teleworking and to close common areas if offices did reopen.

"More people will absolutely be working from home from this day forward," according to Cara Silletto, president and chief retention officer at Crescendo Strategies.
