Downtown Dallas businesses battling through the repercussions of COVID-19 are now dealing with another blowing issue: broken windows and chairs, graffiti, and stolen merchandise.

"The recent damages were just the icing on top," said Beau Nazary, co-owner of Izmir Management and its Cafe Izmir restaurant. “We will rebuild, and we will survive one way or another."

Downtown Dallas Inc. has established a Storefront Restoration Program aimed to help downtown businesses that were vandalized during recent demonstrations. The program will cover businesses with losses not covered by insurance or other means.

Eyes on the Street: New business moving into vacated Thornton Park storefront - bungalower

We often get photographs and tips from our Bungalower readers of things that are happening around town, so we have started featuring them on the site in a series called Eyes on the Street, in honor of our favorite urbanist Jane Jacobs.

We told you about the Gnarly Barley team closing its Big Time Street Food Co. concept in Thornton Park this past April HERE . The storefront, located next to Burton's Bar at 805 E. Washington Street [ GMap ], has already found a new tenant though and they’re going to be serving some BBQ.

Community rallies around damaged downtown storefronts | City Pulse

The damage is still being assessed, but officials expect it’ll be tens of thousands of dollars.

All told, more than a dozen local businesses saw some degree of vandalism by Monday morning. But nearly as soon as Mayor Andy Schor’s overnight curfew had been lifted at 5 a.m., the community was already forming a new sort of rally in the aftermath: Cleaning up the mess.

By 9 a.m. Monday, most local businesses that had windows shattered already had crews boarding up storefronts and assessing repairs. Hundreds scrubbed graffiti from walls, or chalked over them with colorful, flowery murals and a broad message for unity among local residents.

Griffin's Studio owner will close Sixth Street storefront this summer | Hoptown Chronicle

Griffin's Studio, an art gallery and gift store on Sixth Street, will be closing this summer, owner Griffin Moore announced in a Facebook post.

Moore, who started the business in September 2013 in the historic Klein building, said she was mulling a change in the business model before the coronavirus outbreak. However, changes brought on by the pandemic did hasten her decision to close the storefront this year rather than later.

Moore, who has two young sons, said she needed to find a way to continue in the art business while also devoting more time to her family.
