Narrative has raised $8.5 million in Series A funding and is launching a new product designed to further simplify the process of buying and selling data.
I’ve already written about the company’s existing marketplace and software for managing data transactions . With the new Data Streams Marketplace , the process should be simpler than ever — not much different than buying products on Amazon.
“Essentially, the idea was to take the best parts of the e-commerce and search models and apply that to a non-consumer offering to find, discover and ultimately buy data,” founder and CEO Nick Jordan (pictured above on the left) told me. “The premise is make it as easy to buy data as it is to buy stuff online.”

“Our planners are basically our key item every year. And this year, we’re having to order them even farther in advance than we normally would just to make sure that we have these planners on time. And I’m honestly a little bit worried. This is our first year ordering inventory through a boat. And that takes a really long time. But, you know, we’re at this point that’s like, even a little bit more secure than getting things on a plane.
“I think the health of so many industries also impacts the well-being of my business. Like everything is interconnected, and I think that things just take longer because of sourcing. So I think there really is this trickle effect, or like, everything just feels so related. So I think no business or no industry is really totally immune to this.”

Iowa farmers struggling after storms destroyed crops - Marketplace
April Hemmes: I’ve been better, but not too bad. Getting ready to go to my niece’s wedding.
Ryssdal: All right, we’ll get there in a minute. Tell me why you’ve been better, though. It’s been a couple of weeks since these storms. Did they hit you?
Hemmes: Oh, no. They were, fortunately for me, about 40 miles south of me. But imagine what is happening to Louisiana and Texas now [the impact of Hurricane Laura] happened in Iowa, only across the land. It was at times 140-mile-per-hour winds. And I try to relate it, so if you’re on the East Coast, it’s from New York to D.C., 70 miles wide, and it flattened all of our crops, tore up a lot of grain bins where we store our crops. It was devastating.
How COVID-19 compounds economic damage from Hurricane Laura - Marketplace
Hurricane Laura hit land near the border between Texas and Louisiana overnight with wind speeds of 150 miles an hour, more ferocious than those of Hurricane Katrina, then weakened to Category 2 storm. Sustained winds are still over 100 miles an hour.
Sabri Ben-Achour: Louisiana is a second in the nation in terms of the proportion of properties with substantial flood risk. It’s about 1 out of 5 properties. Then again, the area where this made landfall is not super densely populated. What do you expect in terms of economic damage?
Again, more than 1 million Americans applied for jobless benefits - Marketplace
Just over 1 million Americans applied for unemployment benefits last week , a sign that the coronavirus outbreak continues to threaten jobs even as the housing market, auto sales and other segments of the economy rebound from a springtime collapse. The Labor Department reported Thursday that the number of people seeking jobless aid last week dropped by 98,000 from 1.1 million the week before.
The number of initial claims has exceeded 1 million most weeks since late March. Before the coronavirus pandemic, they never topped 700,000 in a week. More than 14.5 million are collecting traditional jobless benefits — up from 1.7 million a year ago — a sign that many American families are depending on unemployment checks to keep them afloat.
