The economics of empty NFL stadiums as the season begins - Marketplace

The NFL season kicks off Thursday. The Wall Street Journal reports that NFL revenue could fall as much as $4 billion in 2020, depending on how many fans eventually attend games.

That's the reality in Los Angeles, where developers built a grand, new stadium with room for 70,000 people to watch the Rams and Chargers play football — but until things change, there will be no fans.

SoFi Stadium in LA cost almost $5 billion in private money , and there were promises of $100 million in tax breaks and reimbursements to lighten the bill. The sell to local authorities was that new stadiums create jobs and increase tourism spending. But with no fans, “unquestionably it's a tougher sell,” said Andrew Zimbalist, professor of economics at Smith College.

New marketplace tackles the lack of diversity in greeting cards - Business Insider

The world's first online marketplace for greeting cards featuring and designed by diverse and underrepresented communities launched on Saturday to mark Black Pound Day, a day that encourages spending at Black-owned businesses in the UK.

Kutenda also platforms the work of up-and-coming artists and entrepreneurs from diverse backgrounds, saying that "large retailers either ignore minority artists or steal their ideas." Alongside cards, the marketplace also sells gifts including mugs, stationery, and bookmarks.

Victoria Rowell on why she started a DIY show for the marginalized - Marketplace

Discourse around representation of minorities and marginalized people in media hasn’t extended to the “Do-It-Yourself” home improvement media space.

Victoria Rowell however is trying to change that with her new show “Trash vs. Treasure,” a DIY program focused on renovating homes and apartments of low-income and single-parent households. Rowell is both executive producer and host of the program.

“Trash vs. Treasure, it’s a teachable moment with this show,” Rowell told “Marketplace Morning Report” host Kimberly Adams. “To encourage people to see value in what’s in plain sight.”

Back-to-school season kicks off this week, but laptops are sold out - Marketplace

On Mondays on Marketplace Tech — even holiday Mondays — we’re looking at the challenges of distance learning as the pandemic rolls on. And this week is kind of the official back-to-school kickoff.

For families and school districts, getting ready for school has meant scrambling to find laptops for kids to use at home. And there is a major shortage of low-cost laptops, like Chromebooks. It’s a combination of the trade war with China and supply chains that have been disrupted by the pandemic. But with millions of students starting school without the tech they need to learn at home, an education system that was already unequal is getting even more so.
