Debates over anti-competitive practices amongst China’s internet firms resurface every year in the lead up to Singles’ Day, a time when online retailers exhaust their resources and deploy sometimes sneaky tactics to attract vendors and shoppers.
Over the years, e-commerce leaders Alibaba, JD.com and Pinduoduo, food delivery platform Meituan, social giant Tencent and other major industry players have been accused of unfair competition to various extent. Behavior targeted by Beijing’s new proposal includes price discrimination among consumers, preferential treatment for merchants who sign exclusive agreements with platforms and compulsory collection of user data.

It's not too late to start holiday shopping
According to a new survey on studyfinds.org , nearly half of Americans have already started shopping since being stuck at home during the pandemic.

Researchers say 75% of people plan on spending more on presents, since travel plans and trips had to be canceled.
The survey showed 48% say they plan on doing their holiday shopping online to avoid the craziness in the stores.
When asked about what items they're interested in buying, about a quarter are buying more electronics, while nearly 30% say they are buying more clothes and accessories.

BERLIN – Mayor Zack Tyndall expressed his commitment to working with merchants as the pandemic continues.
At a meeting of the town council on Monday, Tyndall said marketing of local shops and promotions like carriage rides could go forward this holiday season.
Tyndall’s comments came in the wake of a meeting with merchants last week. It was there that shopkeepers asked Tyndall to reconsider his decision not to allow banners promoting a Nov. 27 ice carving event and to permit carriage rides.

Ulta Beauty strikes deal to open hundreds of shops at Target stores
Target and Ulta Beauty announced a deal Tuesday to open makeup and skincare shops inside of hundreds of Target stores across the country.
Target CEO Brian Cornell said starting in the second half of next year, shoppers will find a smaller version of an Ulta store in more than 100 of Target's stores and on its website.
Each "shop-in-shop" will be about 1,000 square feet with more than 40 beauty brands and a rotating assortment of products from hair care and fragrances to lip gloss. Customers can shop in person or use Target's same-day services, such as curbside pickup or home delivery by Shipt, to get their online beauty purchases.
