In response to the village’s high vacancy rates in the offseason of 2019, Southampton Village Mayor Jesse Warren and the Board of Trustees rolled out Local Law No. 6 on July 21, 2020, amending village code to now require vacant storefronts in the village and highway business districts to put up window displays that are more visually interesting than basic curtains and plain paper.
“When I looked around last year when I took office, we had more vacant storefronts than we had a decade earlier right after the Great Recession,” Mayor Warren recalls. “Any time you have a vacant storefront, it does not help any of the entrepreneurs at the adjacent stores, so we’re basically turning what is a detractor to a business into an opportunity or a positive, because people are now going to want to check out those art installations….

The Week Ahead: Vacaville hosts storefront decorating contest
VACAVILLE — A guided walking tour of Vacaville downtown storefronts is planned as part of the 13th annual Holiday Window Decorating Contest.

Windows will be scored by a panel of judges on the evening of Thursday, judged on their originality, arrangement, theme and overall presentation. Each category will have a winner and a runner-up. Those will be announced Friday.
A one-hour guided tour of the windows will take place Friday and Saturday. Tickets are $15 and include an official voting ballot and souvenir Downtown Vacaville mug filled with hot cocoa or cider. Kids under 12 walk free. The tours are limited to 15 participants to comply with Covid-19 safety regulations.

One boutique in Little Rock has experienced that first hand, where what was a beautifully decorated storefront is now bare, thanks to thieves who stole their decorations.

Defying the trend of empty storefronts on commercial streets, San Francisco architects are moving forward with plans to turn the ground floor of a historic Financial District building into a gathering space that includes a cafe and gallery.
The 10,000-square-foot space in the Hallidie Building on Sutter Street will house the city’s chapter of the American Institute of Architects. The organization will almost double the space it now has upstairs, and hopes to open next summer with a set of public events.

The Lakewood Chamber of Commerce invites all businesses in the city to “Share your Sparkle” this holiday season ~ by entering the Annual Holiday Storefront Decorating Contest.
The Chamber has also been instrumental in encouraging the businesses community to renew the tradition of displaying blue lights during the holidays. It first started at the Colonial Center during the Christmas season. Mary, the wife of Norton Clapp who designed the center, inspired owners of nearby shopping centers to follow the color scheme, and in the late 1930’s blue bulbs symbolized the holiday spirit of Lakewood businesses.

A citywide arts initiative is filling empty Queens storefronts with work by diverse creators seeking to spark conversations about the impact of the climate crisis.
The Human Impacts Institute has brought its 2020 Creative Climate Awards honorees to the streets in lieu of a traditional gallery. Their work, including an installation in an Astoria storefront, highlights the impact of the climate crisis on low-income communities of color.
The Astoria piece, "Infrared Thermography Series," features digital images captured through heat mapping by Joyce Hwang and Prathap Ramamurthy.

Hillbilly Cycle Sales located on the eastern end of Mercer Street has been a staple in the community for years, and now they've gotten a fresh look for their storefront. Greg Puckett with Community Connections has been painting the building for the better part of the last week. He says the project is part of an ongoing initiative to spruce up Princeton's downtown areas.
