Pandemic window-shopping: Abandoning e-commerce shopping carts

In normal times, Amanda Ryczek window-shopped — wandering around with no intention to buy, but taking time to see new merchandise or thinking of what could be worn and where.

As the Covid-19 pandemic shut down brick-and-mortar stores, the 27-year-old moved her habits online.

"I'm definitely not going into stores in the present moment, and so, as far as going online, you go to the store's website and in some weird way it's almost like going to the store," Ryczek said.

Yoder store transports customers from outside the community to a bygone era

Many people often wish time would stand still, technology would disappear and they would once again get closer to the earth.

Yoder Hardware sits at the center of this town whose population fluctuates at around 200. Like the hardware store's owner, much of the population in Yoder is Amish.

Because of the local presence of both Amish and Old Order Mennonites, the hardware store carries items that cater to this population, who do not use electricity from public utility lines, own a car, television or radio. Grants to spiff up storefronts soon available for businesses in downtown Easton -

Easton small business owners soon can benefit from facade grant funding to help improve the downtown business district.

Funds are being offered by the Easton Main Street Initiative for those looking to make repairs or improvements to buildings. Any exterior improvements will be considered, including paint, windows, repointing, doors, maintenance, façade repair or restoration, lighting and signage.

The program of the nonprofit Greater Easton Development Partnership has been able to offer façade grants with the help of its community partners for the past 16 years. E-commerce surged during Covid: Groceries, sporting goods top gainers

U.S. e-commerce sales in 2020 grew more than 30% from 2019, according to quarterly figures released by the U.S. Department of Commerce on Friday, as the coronavirus pandemic and nationwide lockdowns pushed shoppers to rely on internet retailers for their consumer needs.

Americans spent $791.7 billion online last year, up 32.4% from 2019. Meanwhile, total retail sales in 2020 increased 3.4% from the year prior. Francisco Lindor opened a Pandora's Laptop of sorts this past week when he railed against analytics as a threat to baseball. But he was only half-right.

Lindor is one of the most entertaining players in the sport, a speedy, often spectacular switch-hitting shortstop who is a joy to watch, unless of course you're playing against him. The people who inhabit front offices, however, high above where Lindor conducts his business, aren't necessarily worried about what the game looks like.

AstraZeneca vaccine doses land in Sydney

The first shipment of the COVID-19 vaccine that most Australians will receive has arrived in Sydney, with Prime Minister Scott Morrison hailing a new milestone in the fight against the virus.

The first 300,000 doses of AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine landed from overseas on Sunday, but 50 million doses of this type will be manufactured by CSL in Australia.

The Therapeutic Goods Administration will now batch test the first shipment to ensure it meets Australia's strict quality standards.
