May River Marketplace in Bluffton moves closer to approval
May River Marketplace will no longer need a letter of support from nearby homeowners to have its development plan approved by the town of Bluffton.
The town's planning commission unanimously voted April 28 to remove that condition. It also removed a condition to have developer Loftin-Moore present its final development plan to the commission.
Attorney Richardson LaBruce told commission members they do not have the legal authority to require either condition under the town's development approval process. LaBruce's firm Finger, Melnick, Brooks & LaBruce represents the town. He said it was serving as counsel for the commission at the meeting.

After a lost summer, demand for camp is "through the roof" - Marketplace
Kai Ryssdal: So what are you looking at for Friendly Pines this coming summer? You guys going to be busy?
Kevin Nissen: We are going to be very busy. The pent-up demand is through the roof for summer camp. So add to that a large population of kids along with a whole host of new procedures that we’ve never done in 80 years. It’s gonna be a busy summer.
Ryssdal: I bet it is. And I apologize for chuckling, but, you know, pent-up demand is something you hear in you know, industrial contexts and consumers looking for retail stuff. You don’t hear much for summer camp. But I imagine after last summer when none of these parents could ship their kids off and you couldn’t employ a bunch of people, there’s real eagerness in getting as many kids in those bunkhouses as they can.
Earmarks are back — and could help Biden's infrastructure plans - Marketplace
President Joe Biden met Thursday with a delegation of Senate Republicans to talk about infrastructure. At the same time, Congress is working on its annual surface transportation bill — which could be tacked on to Biden's infrastructure plan. A key component of that bill is earmarks, the term for money lawmakers request for projects back home. But earmarks have their pros and cons.
On the pro side, earmarks can get lawmakers to work together because both Republicans and Democrats have skin in the game — say, money in a bill for new roads in their districts.
