Opinion: Value messaging shouldn’t be lost on customers | Springfield Business Journal

The widespread challenge of differentiating value from competitors affects small and large companies alike.

Level playing fields and shrunken competitive advantages force products and services to vie for attention in a sea of sameness, creating a commodity coffin of sorts, where products and services are treated among suppliers as identical – even if they’re not.

No doubt, competitor parity is a fact of doing business today. Part of the problem, though, is of our own making. Many companies, if not most, still communicate a one-size-fits-all value message to customers, which limits their ability to create unique customer perceived value. While it’s true that all customers buy for the universal motives of quality or service, it’s also true they don’t make those purchases for the same reasons.

Simple banking customers still locked out; parent BBVA says its customer service crashed -

Former clients of Portland online banker Simple remained unable to access their accounts Tuesday, and they were unable to reach the bank that now holds their money after its customer service systems crashed amid a flood of calls from outraged customers.

Simple was owned by Spanish banking giant BBVA, which announced in January it would shut down the Portland banker and transfer clients' accounts to BBVA. That transition took place on schedule Saturday, but BBVA botched the handover and locked many customers out of their accounts.

Trusting Customers: One of the most important decisions of Customer-Centric Companies |

Tony is in charge of a convenience store in Salt Lake City, where I attended a customer experience conference. I told him I wanted to buy a certain brand of beer. He said his shop didn’t have it. Instead of insisting that I buy another beer, he directed me to the liquor store nearby where I could find what I wanted.

These are the commenters’ beliefs. I’m not saying they are wrong. We just have different beliefs about how we should treat our customers. My belief is that customers are humans, not numbers. I was doing the same as Tony did without seeing anyone else doing it before. I was serving rather than selling.

Better Customer Education Can Help Tech Firms Retain Customers and Grow Revenues

Customer education, in which firms train customers on how to get the most value out of their products, helps businesses to retain customers and grow revenues. But half of firms struggle to report on the success of such training, limiting the impact on the business. 1

For tech firms, software-as-a-service profits increase the longer the firm retains a customer. 2 Customer education programs help firms to explain their products to customers, thereby improving experience, retention, and revenues as a result.

5 Ways Amazon Creates New Products That Customers Crave | Inc.com

Amazon has had an amazing streak of revenue growth -- up an average of 27 percent a year in the decade ending 2020. With  founder and CEO  Jeff Bezos  preparing to kick himself upstairs in the third quarter of 2021, will the company be able to keep growing rapidly when his successor, Andy Jassy takes over?

I do not know the answer to that. However, I think the way Amazon has created and scaled new products and services is likely to continue under Jassy. What's more, Amazon's approach could help business leaders like you to boost your company's growth.
