Dear Abby: Shopping trip turned into 'stolen valor' incident
DEAR ABBY: While shopping with a friend recently, I was put in an awkward situation in regard to a store discount.
Having served in the military, I qualify for a discount at that particular store. She was aware of that discount, and while she was at the checkout lane, she yelled at me, “Hey, what’s your phone number for your military discount?”
DEAR RETIRED: I’m glad you mentioned valor in your letter because it’s time for you to summon up some more. Unless you want this person to continue taking advantage of you, set her straight. She is not entitled to the discount, and you must learn to refuse if and when she puts you in that position again.
How to Stop Your Weak Pavlovian Brain From Shopping Impulsively
Participants in the study had their brains scanned while they were shown dozens of everyday products and were asked whether they would buy each product at the stated price, using their own actual money, either in the form of cash or credit cards. The results were consistent with other empirical studies that have shown that people are more willing to purchase higher-price items with plastic rather than cash.
While by no means definitive (the sample size is small and unvaried, and the amounts were limited to $50), the study's findings confirmed the hypothesis that the brain learns to anticipate the pleasures of credit-card shopping after repeated credit-card purchases over time (in the study's own unique wording, we're "chronically sensitized by prior experience with credit cards").
Flea markets continuing to expand shopping options with some restrictions relaxed
Multiple events this weekend have highlighted the expansion of flea market shopping as COVID-19 restrictions and limits are relaxed around the state.
Larger facilities like Trader's World in Monroe, which has 850 indoor vendor spaces and 400 outdoor spaces spread over 11 acres, are also continuing to adjust. When COVID-19 hit, Trader's World shut down for two months, then reopened with precautions.
"We complied with everything the government wanted," said owner Jay Frick III. "We asked people to wear masks. We offer masks. I walk around with a mask pack. We have blue arrows on the floor directing people, stickers for six feet, there's 25 hand sanitizing stations, so if people touch something, there's a handy place to clean upt."

Garden Centers Discuss Cold Weather and Mother's Day Shopping - 9 & 10 News
Mother’s Day weekend is here, and for some us the cold and wet weather may put a damper on plans to celebrate mom. Especially if that means buying mom some flowers for the garden.
At Garden Goods in Traverse City, General Manager Robin Smillie says, “Things are great. We’re exactly where we’re supposed to be this time of year. Aside from the weather – is just a tad on the chilly side.”
Even though a lot of us are ready for warmer weather, this isn’t all that unusual. In fact, at nurseries and garden centers, the experts say this weather is pretty typical for early May. Jeanine Rubert at Pine Hill Village Gardens (in Traverse City and Kewadin) says, “Last year the week before Mother’s Day was almost identical to this. In fact we had snow on the Friday before Mother’s Day.”
