Since entering the race for Manhattan's District 6 City Council race, Zack Weiner has promised direct action. As a result, 12-year-old Obocho Peters, owner of "Obocho's Closet" is bringing his children's thrift shop to Manhattan's Upper West Side, in conjunction with city council candidate Zack Weiner's "Startup Retail Initiative" which aims to fill vacant storefronts with budding start-up minded businesses.

Maybe it's because my mom just turned a fragile 96, but I have been filled with an awareness of the transience of people and things, a feeling the Japanese have a special term for, "mono no aware," and that you can always feel as an undercurrent at the City of Eugene's annual Asian Celebration.
This year, downtown Eugene's empty storefronts have been transformed into art installations by local Asian artists. One of my favorites I discovered at 856 Willamette by Sandra Honda. It is called "She Sat in the Forest Surrounding Herself in the Rapture of Birdsong." Some of Honda's calligraphic marks are taken from spectrograms of bird songs. She used their voices to guide her drawing as she built layers of ink and paper.

Walking through New York City over the last month, locals and visitors were treated to the sight of leading luxury brands featured in first-of-their-kind storefront takeovers.
With vaccinations on the rise and warm weather incoming, brands know consumers are desperate to be out and about. And among go-to destinations are hot shopping districts like SoHo, Nolita and Madison Avenue. At the end of March, retail foot traffic in the city was down just 2% from a year prior, which held steady through the end of April , according to Placer.ai. That was the closest it had been to pre-pandemic levels since the pandemic began.

But now, after a year of nearly devastating delays because of the pandemic, Goodies can finally move into a permanent home in Alexandria, Virginia, that matches its signature brand of decadent nostalgia.
Goodies is remodeling the historic Ice House on Commerce Street and hopes to open by Memorial Day weekend. It will be Goodies' first storefront.

Businesses in Battleford will have a chance to strut their stuff for a chance to win a prize with a new contest the town is organizing.
At Monday's council meeting, town community planner Paige Reynolds proposed the Storefront Beautiful Business Contest to give a bit of a boost to local establishments.
Reynolds said the contest will be a good way to encourage more businesses to engage with the town, as well as beautify the community. Businesses might want to beautify their storefront through a number of ways, such as by adding some window paint, balloons or flowers, for example.

Knowde brings online marketplace to plastics
An increasingly digital world is creating opportunities for online platform Knowde and suppliers such as Braskem America and DuPont Co.
San Jose, Calif.-based Knowde officially launched its plastics, elastomers and polymer additives platform in early May. Officials said the online platform allows plastics and elastomers specifiers, converters, compounders and buyers to search, filter, collaborate, request samples and quotes and purchase from hundreds of producers all in one place.
