Amazon's Cashier-less Technology Was Supposed To Revolutionize Grocery Shopping.
Amazon's "Just Walk Out" technology, which was initially hailed as the future of retail, is now being scaled back at its grocery stores. The company has announced that it will continue using this technology in certain locations, such as Amazon Go stores, smaller format Fresh stores in the UK, and third-party locations like sports stadiums and college campuses.
However, the number of human checkouts will be reduced as the technology is developed. According to Amazon, data associates will continue to work on the underlying technology, but their main role will now be to validate a small minority of shopping transactions.
In a statement, Amazon explained that it is "reducing the number of human reviews" while developing the "Just Walk Out" technology.
The company had previously used approximately 1,000 humans in India to help monitor accurate checkouts. The decision to scale back the technology is likely a result of the challenges and limitations of implementing cashier-less checkout systems in a large-scale retail environment. ← →
