South End residents will soon have a new takeout lunch spot after the Palm Beach Town Council greenlit a proposal to convert an adjacent retail bay into a storefront for Acqua Café's takeout operations.
"I think it's going to be a good addition, because (residents) like to zip in and zip out," Mayor Danielle Moore said.
Council members unanimously voted Oct. 15 to approve the site plan and special exception needed to transform the neighboring retail bay into Acqua Express Café.
The takeout counter would have no seating and serve as a separate storefront connected solely by a back-of-house entryway, attorney Maura Ziska told the council. Takeout orders are currently handled at the restaurant's small bar, which Ziska said was an uncomfortable experience for guests.
"They come to the restaurant for takeout but … people are sitting there eating, or sitting at the bar, and it's just very awkward picking up your order while someone is sitting there eating," she said.
Duran said the takeout counter would operate during the day and cater to neighboring residents and businesses. According to the project's letter of intent, the counter will be open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Opened in 2020, Acqua Café is in the southwest portion of a 30,000-square-foot, Mediterranean-style building at 2875 S. Ocean Blvd. The 2,200-square-foot restaurant seats 92 and features an outdoor dining area at its south.
