Mark Zuckerberg 's Meta, which owns Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram, reveals they will partner with eBay to allow listings from the ecommerce website to appear within Marketplace in a bid to keep European regulators happy.
The European Union suspects Marketplace feature could wield too much power and thus be anti-competitive so they will introduce e-Bay to try to restrict their own influence. Pilots will be tested in Germany and France and will see users portal to eBay to complete a purchase after clicking a product on Facebook .
The move comes after the EU fined the social media giant $825m dollars in November 2023 in an anti-trust case concerning how Marketplace was connected to the main Facebook app's homepage. It was considered anti-competitive considering the site has over three billion users.
"This could benefit people using both platforms,' Meta explained in a statement. "eBay sellers will gain exposure to Facebook 's audience.
"While people using Marketplace will be able to discover a broader array of listings from the eBay community."
Despite being the pioneer in the industry, eBay has fallen behind rivals such as Amazon and Temu since the latter part of the 2010s and moved into focusing on specialist markets in order to remain competitive compared to the American and Chinese giants.
Jamie Iannone , CEO, explained to CNBC how the company now prioritizes vintage and luxurious goods and has found a new audience in the form of users looking for second-hand and refurbished products in the tough economic climate.
