Convenience-store apps are the digital storefront that need the same attention as a retailer's physical storefront, according to Bill Bustin, head of customer success for convenience-store app platform  Rovertown , St. Louis, on Thursday at M-Pact in Indianapolis .

During the education session Maximizing Success with Modern C-Store Apps, Bustin outlined strategies to make a retailer's app intuitive and user-friendly, ensuring it meets user needs and keeps them engaged.

"Use your app as a tentpole for your organization," Bustin said. "Offer collaboration opportunities with category management, operations and human resources."

When it comes to user data, Bustin highlighted that apps bring value to a c-store operator's retail strategies.

"Top apps in our industry marry their app strategy directly to their overall retail strategy," he said.

When it comes to app content and offerings, Bustin said it is important to ungate the app, which allows free access to all.

Bustin said that 80% of customers are not loyalty members and that it's necessary to "open your app to welcome everyone."

Another tool Bustin offered was the need to send push notifications. He said that there is a 129% increase in app sessions when a push is sent, compared to the previous day.
