That sign greets anyone walking in the door of DEVOUR Gluten Free which opened Nov. 30 in South Milwaukee.
Owner Christina Mike of Oak Creek has operated DEVOUR, a gourmet blend and baking mix business, for the last four years, but the location at 1302 Milwaukee Ave. is her first storefront.
Previously, her gluten-free mixes were primarily available at farmer's markets in Oak Creek, Shorewood, Kenosha and elsewhere.
Her mixes were first made available in the Locally Inspired Store in Port Washington, and later at Pine Acres General Store in Union Grove, Pop's Pantry in Muskego, and the newly opened Farmer's Market To Go in Brookfield, to name a few. Mike said they'll still be available at these locations.
Mike took culinary classes after high school and worked in a few different bakeries in the Milwaukee area through the '90s, including as a pastry chef at Potawatomi. She considered opening a bakery in the past but those plans never came to fruition.
After the fire, Mike, a lunch lady at Oak Creek's Forest Ridge Elementary, was given permission to use the school kitchen to make her blends.
