PG&E Corp. PCG -0.44% said it was cutting off electricity Tuesday to as many as 51,000 customers in heavily forested parts of Northern California to reduce the risk that its power equipment will spark wildfires.
The utility company said it began implementing so-called public safety power shut-offs Tuesday at 5 p.m. Pacific Time in small parts of 18 counties north of San Francisco in anticipation of wind gusts up to 40 miles an hour, conditions that can cause fires to rapidly spread.

SAN FRANCISCO – Pacific Gas & Electric Co. on Tuesday night began shutting off power to 51,000 customers in Northern California to reduce the risk of sparking new wildfires amid dry and windy conditions.
The public safety power shutoff, or PSPS, is expected to affect customers in 18 counties, including 18 in Alameda County, 334 in Contra Costa County, 1,093 in Solano County, 1,864 in Sonoma County and 6,849 in Napa County.
