China is launching its first state-backed non-fungible token ( NFT ) marketplace, the latest sign of embrace for a technology that has occupied a legal gray area within the country's notoriously strict regulations on cryptocurrency .
The platform will be run by three state-owned and private entities, including China Technology Exchange and Art Exhibitions China, both of which are government-backed, and Huban Digital, a private company, according to a report by Chinese state media outlet China Daily.
China's National NFT Marketplace Will Launch In January
China's NFT marketplace will use a blockchain called the China Cultural Security Chain. However, it will use the trading instruments and settlement mechanisms of China Technology Exchange.
To be sure, China has a long history with NFTs. Early this year, the country announced it would permit NFT trading, but with a catch. To explain, there are stark differences in NFT trading in China and the rest of the world.

The new marketplace will launch in March, coinciding with the fiscal 2024 senior enlisted advancement cycle for promotion to E-9. The goal is for the marketplace to eventually include E-7 and E-8 advancements and detailing.
"Billet Based Advancements are how E-5 through E-9 Sailors will advance in the future, where a qualified Sailor applies and competes for a billet requirement in the next higher paygrade within the MyNavy Assignment (MNA)," Vice Adm. Richard Cheeseman, chief of naval personnel, said in a statement.
