Whatley grew up in Garden City, until around fifth grade when her family moved to Washington. After high school, she moved to Wichita to attend Wichita State University and compete in track and field events, specifically the 400-meter hurdles.
Whatley said she worked three jobs while attending Wichita State University and competing as a Division I athlete, which she said eventually became too stressful.
