A trifecta of changes — new competition, a sluggish economy and continued regulatory pressures — has China's Alibaba revamping its eCommerce businesses and appointing a new chief financial officer (CFO).

In a move to become more agile and rev up expansion, Alibaba is splitting its eCommerce business into two divisions — international digital commerce and China digital commerce, Reuters reported on Monday (Dec. 6).

Kohl's Urged to Sell Company or Spin off eCommerce | PYMNTS.com

Kohl's, the second-largest U.S. department store chain, has been urged by activist investors to either sell itself outright or consider a spin-off of its eCommerce division in a bid to boost its stock price.

According to The Wall Street Journal, New York-based hedge fund Engine Capital is calling on Kohl's to either sell the company or separate its eCommerce business in response to its failing stock price, which has slumped 25% in the past 7 months after more than doubling from the pandemic lows set

Breaking up is hard to do, which department store stalwart Macy's is discovering as it wrestles with how best to split up its store and online businesses, a bit trickier than the same move by Saks Fifth Avenue, according to a report in Reuters .

While Saks has just 40 retail stores, making its ecommerce business less dependent on it for success, Macy's has a fleet of 800 doors and its online side relies heavily on them for order fulfillment including store pickup and local delivery.
