Are we missing the point about climate change? - Marketplace

California is facing its worst wildfire season on record. Tropical storms and hurricanes are brewing in the Atlantic with abnormal frequency . The effects of climate change are becoming more apparent, but if we focus on climate change as the problem to solve, we’re missing the bigger picture, say Ayana Elizabeth Johnson and Katharine Wilkinson. They teamed up to co-edit the book “All We Can Save: Truth, Courage, and Solutions for the Climate Crisis.

Ayana Elizabeth Johnson: Yeah, and even more so a problem caused by a very small group of humans who made some horrible decisions on behalf of the rest of us. One of the problems with the environmental movement is that it has allowed the fossil fuel industry to spread the blame across all of us.

Many things are taking place:

"Why don't you fix your teeth?" - This is Uncomfortable from Marketplace

Things would start off really well, then, out of nowhere, she'd feel the air get sucked out of the room. It all came down to a single moment.

"That's when I smiled, that's when I relaxed and really smiled," she said. Jones realized "Crap, it's my teeth."

* * *

Jones grew up in a mining town where tooth decay was pretty common. When she was 11, a friend accidentally hit her in the mouth with a hammer, severely chipping her two front teeth. Plus, her parents never had money for consistent dental care. As much as Jones wanted straight white teeth as a kid, a solution was always out of reach.

In Mexico, auto industry struggles to rev up operations - Marketplace

Mexico and the United States are deeply connected by trade, with very close ties in the automotive industry. In mid-May, the sector started to reopen in Mexico after pressure from lobbying groups on both sides of the border.

A new U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement took effect on July 1, 2020. It requires the auto industry to standardize workers' salaries and use more materials that come from the three countries.

Miguel Barbeyto, Mazda Mexico's president and CEO , said the company is getting ready for that, while dealing with protocols around the pandemic. “So, we need to work hard,” Barbeyto said.

The ECB plans to set up an Amazon-style marketplace to sell billions in bad debt in a challenge

The move would challenge the dominance of big Wall Street debt investors, and is targeted at those running smaller portfolios.

The ECB's proposal for the new marketplace has not been signed as yet, Reuters said. It will be discussed with officials on Friday.

If the 19-member eurozone agrees to the plan, the digital platform could come under the authority of the Single Resolution Board, a European Union agency based in Brussels that finances banks facing difficulties, Reuters reported.

Quite a lot has been going on:

For Fashion Week, the industry tries to reinvent itself - Marketplace

We're in the middle of fashion week season: New York's and London's have wrapped up, Milan's is going on right now and Paris' will round out the sequence next week.

The runway shows have been scaled back, socially distanced and mostly virtual. The slimmed-down events are one indication of how the fashion industry's scrambling to make sense of a world under lockdown.

In the program for his New York Fashion Week event, designer Tom Ford wrote that at the height of stay-at-home orders, he felt fashion should simply go into hibernation for a year. He's not alone in that thought. Susan Scafidi, founder and academic director at the Fashion Law Institute at Fordham University, said these fashion week shows are “in some ways a placeholder.”

Climate change reversal startup Nori raises $4M for its CO2 offsets marketplace - GeekWire

Nori , a Seattle-based startup striving to help reverse climate change, announced Thursday that it has closed a $4 million fundraising round.

The seed round was led by New York's Placeholder, a blockchain-focused venture fund, which was joined by North Island Ventures, Tenacious Ventures, and others, including an unnamed agriculture giant.

Using cryptocurrency, Nori sells carbon credits to individuals and businesses to offset their carbon emissions. The startup, which launched in 2017, pays farmers to use verifiable, sustainable practices that store carbon dioxide, such as reducing the tilling of their soil and by planting off-season cover crops. The marketplace has sold offsets totaling nearly to 13,000 metric tons of CO2, with plans to sell an additional 20,000 tonnes by the end of the year.
