The launch included ecommerce at its most basic level. "As a Silicon Valley-based company in 2010, we had to have a website and ecommerce capability," says Mekhtarian, the chief executive. "We started simple with an HTML-based website and a PayPal Buy button but had no real ecommerce platform."

The digitization boom catalyzed by the pandemic has not been isolated to just the U.S. Indeed, it has been a global phenomenon that continues to drive adoption of B2B eCommerce as in-person trade shows and sales pitches fall by the wayside — perhaps permanently.

Rogue Shopify Staff Accessed Customer Records, Says Ecommerce Platform Investigating Security

Thankfully, Shopify says that “complete payment card numbers or other sensitive personal or financial information were not part of this incident.”

That type of information would clearly have increased the severity of the breach, but that’s not to say that there’s no harm in the data which has been exposed.

In addition, it’s clear that things could have been much worse in terms of scale as well. Shopify boasts of being used by more than one million businesses in 175 different countries, and is considered the third-largest online retailer in the United States after Amazon and eBay.

How can brands cater to new fans of eCommerce? - Essential Retail

While shops have reopened, it is likely that many retailers will not return to business as usual for quite some time. Even with the rise in sales seen in early July following the reopening of pubs and restaurants , footfall was still below half of what it was this time last year. Restrictions such as limited entry and closed fitting rooms mean that the in-store experience will be quite different for months to come.

Surprisingly for some, older shoppers make up a significant proportion of these new eCommerce converts. Recent research found that 70% of shoppers aged 56 years or older said they shopped online occasionally or rarely before lockdown. Yet nearly a third of this group now predict that after lockdown they will shop online more frequently than they did before March 2020.
