“For the last 15-20 years, public libraries have really reinvented themselves, and they are a place to come and stay. It’s not just take a book, leave a book.” That’s what Jennifer Pearson, director of the Marshall County Memorial Library in Tennessee and president of the Association for Rural and Small Libraries, told “Marketplace” host Kai Ryssdal back in May .
Kai Ryssdal: So you are, I think, back at regular hours, doors are open. A big change from the last time we talked. How’s it going?

Four generations of family work together on restaurant - Marketplace
Tess Thomas, the owner of Emma’s BBQ in Seattle, Washington, has been in the restaurant industry for years. She named the restaurant after her mother, Emma, who, according to Thomas, was a natural cook.
“Emma was just a person that anything she could smell, she could put her twist to it and it became something delectable,” Thomas said. “Her recipes go back to the days of slavery. I’ve tweaked them just a little bit, but I have a love of these recipes.”
Choice: The secret ingredient to creating a cross-border marketplace (with video) - FreightWaves
Creating a cross-border marketplace from scratch is a tough business, but Forager CEO and co-founder Matt Silver looked to tech giants like Amazon, eBay and Airbnb for inspiration.
"It’s not about thinking how we used to do this back in the day, it’s how do we do this differently now," Silver said. "We want shippers and carriers to be able to have choice on what they do on a daily basis. We want to position this technology as a way for people to grow their businesses."

For some, quitting a job during COVID-19 may make sense - Marketplace
There were some new data from the Labor Department last week: The number of people voluntarily quitting their jobs increased by 344,000 to 2.9 million in July .
Often a high quit rate means unemployment is low and people feel confident that they can find a better job. But with the pandemic, even though unemployment is high, things are different.
“Gaps in resumes now are much more understandable than they might have been in the past,” said Matthew Slaughter, an economist at Dartmouth.
'One endless loop': How Golf is using its new retail marketplace as a first-party data
Golf was one of the first sports to return both professionally and recreationally during the coronavirus pandemic. And the boost in interest in the sport has given Golf Magazine, and its digital site Golf.com, the ability to test out its new commerce business against a wider audience.
In June, the publisher launched its new retail marketplace, the Pro Shop, as an extension of the affiliate business it created at the end of 2019. Over the past three months, the shop has seen three to four times the number of sales month over month, according to Rob DeChiaro, chief digital officer of Golf. He declined to share hard revenue figures for the business.
Replace legacy healthcare staffing with a vertical marketplace for workers – TechCrunch
This “COVID-19 whipsaw” has brought into focus a problem that has long been simmering in healthcare: The movement of labor is highly inefficient. We need a new paradigm in healthcare labor markets.
The marathon of addressing COVID-19 has imposed severe stress, depression and anxiety on our nation as a whole, with our healthcare providers at the epicenter. Clinician burnout was a serious issue even before COVID-19, but it has only gotten worse in recent months, especially for those working in geographic hotspots.
