In case you are keeping track:

Got a Minute? Shopping … then and now

As I write this in September, I am starting to see Christmas decorations arrive in several stores. After being raised in the retail world, and with 50-plus years' experience, it no longer shocks me.

Right now, I have seen simultaneous displays of Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. In my first years of retailing, Christmas was not mentioned until after Thanksgiving. Back then, most stores were closed on Sundays, too.

Malls changed that. Open every evening, Sundays, and many holidays, they pushed most other retailers to follow suit, opening on Sundays, later evening hours, and holidays. The interstate highways made it easier to get to the malls, but for many it was still a considerable ride there and back. Even though there was lots of parking at the malls, it was often a long walk from the car to a particular shop. Malls, though, were considered the epitome of convenience.

Consumer Sentiment Uncertain Before Holidays | PYMNTS.com

But that's not how things have played out half a year on, and the majority of U.S. consumers now expect disruptions to drag on well into 2021.

But no matter what the cause, it's pretty clear as we inch toward the holiday-shopping season that U.S. consumers have evolved into somewhat different people since the pandemic began. But exactly what they've evolved into remains somewhat tricky to predict a few weeks before the season kicks off.

But faced with the outbreak's tremendous economic uncertainty, Americans quickly learned to be better savers. The U.S. personal savings rate hit an historic 33 percent of disposable income in April as Americans hunkered down amid COVID-19.
