San Francisco lawmakers are working to reduce the number of vacant storefronts in the city with rules that can impose fines on the owners of empty storefronts.
In a densely populated, thriving city, the local corner store, cafe, bookstore or mom-and-pop hardware stores are what define the varied neighborhoods, according to Supervisor Sandra Lee Fewer.

That means an empty storefront is more than just some windows covered in newspaper and why Fewer wrote an ordinance to update San Francisco’s vacant storefront program.
Quite a lot has been going on:
Empty storefronts prevent growth, deter shoppers in downtown Dover
A walk down Loockerman Street takes visitors past some of the gems of downtown Dover, from boutiques boasting trendy fashions to gift shops with handcrafted treasures to family-owned restaurants and barbershops where everyone knows your name.
Still, scattered among these businesses are empty storefronts, which Mayor Robin Christiansen said may discourage potential business owners who see the vacancies as a sign the area is not a good investment.
"Vacant buildings don't send a great message as far as I'm concerned," he said. "We need to get them filled up, and we need to get them fixed up, so people know we're in business to do business."
Investigation continues after SUV crashes through storefront, critically injuring boy
The teenager was pinned under the car when it crashed through the front window of a Rainbow clothing store on 24th Street near Passyunk Avenue. Police say a 71-year-old driver stepped on the gas instead of the brake, sending the car through the glass.

"Glass all over the floor, mannequins on the floor. I went back and I looked inside the store and I see this red car in there. But I don't see the kid. Where's the kid at? And all of a sudden, the kid was under the car," he said.
What's Cooking on 1060: D’Emilio’s Old World Ice Treats opens storefront on
Christopher D’Emilio, owner of D’Emilio’s Old World Ice Treats, is taking a risk, but he knows a thing or two about taking chances.
"Before this, I used to be a casino dealer at the Sugarhouse Casino," he said, but his passion was always making sorbets.
He used to make them in his free time by renting commissary spaces and selling at farmers markets via a traveling cart. Recently, his friend Mike Strauss, of Mike's BBQ at 11th and Morris streets, convinced him to open a store.
