Facebook, Twitter, Shopify: Why companies think work from home is here to stay - The Week

"Change is the only constant," might be the most popularly used statement in the post-COVID world. Earlier this month, announcing the arrival of a paradigm shift in work culture, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey wrote to his employees that whoever wishes to work remotely could continue to do so indefinitely. Less than 10 days later, more companies in the technology world, including Facebook and e-commerce website Shopify, are joining the bandwagon.

Shopify's new 'digital' model could provide smaller companies with cool digs | CBC

Shopify's decision to move to a work-from-home model could give smaller tech companies the opportunity to land some of Ottawa's best real estate at a discount, according to one local real estate expert.

The Ottawa-based e-commerce company, which employs more than 5,000 people, occupies half the floors in the Elgin Street building where it's headquartered downtown and several floors at another office tower nearby.

Shopify is best known for its href="https://directamp.com/" title="">ecommerce platform that has enabled over one million businesses to create online stores. The platform also allows the creation of third-party apps and plugins , which has helped create a robust developer community and made it even easier for businesses to use Shopify with their existing PoS, communication, and delivery services.

In 2019, Shopify announced significant services and acquisitions that would help them compete directly with Amazon. In June 2019, they launched the Shopify Fulfillment Network , and in September 2019, they acquired 6 River Systems , maker of cloud-based fulfillment software, and mobile robots.

When the pandemic forced Jan Buerge to shut down World's Window, the Kansas City clothing and accessories store she opened 35 years ago, she jumped into crisis mode.

Buerge is one of thousands of mom-and-pop shops who have turned to the online sales platform since the pandemic closed their doors, sending the number of new Shopify-powered stores soaring 62% between March 13 and April 24. These outlets, along with the one million merchants already using Shopify, boosted gross merchandise volume 46% to $17.4 billion in the first three months of the year.

Shopify's 39-year old billionaire founder 'Tobi' Lütke on the secrets of his success

For Tobias "Tobi" Lütke, the road to e-commerce billionairedom was paved by a childhood gift from his parents.

The Shopify founder was six when he received an Amstrad CPC computer. He played Pac-Man and Space Invaders obsessively, but video games were scarce, so he tinkered with them and set about building his own, aged 12.

"I got so fascinated with my computer; it was more interesting than anything else and it was certainly more interesting than school," says German-born Lütke over video chat from his home near the Canadian city of Ottawa. He is wearing a grey hoodie and his trademark flat cap.

Shopify Now Has an End-to-End Platform For Merchants, Logistics, and Consumers | The

In a nutshell, Shop allows a user to discover and create a feed of businesses, receive updates from said businesses, easily order and check out, and manage shipment and returns. With its debut, Shop now yields Shopify an end-to-end e-commerce solution covering merchant services, logistics, and a consumer-facing marketplace. Does it support the ludicrous premium on the stock? Probably not. No matter, though. Betting against this ambitious digital commerce empowerment company would be folly.
