U.S. e-commerce sales grew more than 30% between the first and second quarter of 2020, according to quarterly figures released by the U.S. Department of Commerce on Tuesday, illustrating that the pandemic has pushed more spending online.
Consumers spent $211.5 billion online during the second quarter, up 31.8% from the previous quarter. That's a significant step up from the first quarter, which saw U.S. e-commerce sales of $160.3 billion, an increase of 2.4% from the fourth quarter of 2019. E-commerce now accounts for 16.1% of all U.S. sales, up from 11.8% in the first quarter.

Nordstrom's ecommerce sales represent 61% of revenue in Q2
Apparel retail chain Nordstrom Inc.'s digital sales decreased 5% to approximately $1.13 billion in its fiscal second quarter ended Aug. 1, while total revenue dropped 51.9% to $1.86 billion during the quarter.
Nordstrom typically has its annual Anniversary Sale in July, but this year the company postponed the event to August because of store closures during the pandemic. Excluding the impact of the Anniversary Sale event shift, digital sales increased approximately 20% in Q2 and mid-teens range year-to-date, the retail chain says. Nordstrom did not report year-to-date ecommerce sales growth, but in Q1 it said digital sales grew 5%. That means web sales have been flat during its fiscal year thus far.
