Fleming, Ear Candy record shop adapt and thrive to pandemic challenges

MISSOULA — After almost 24 years in business, Ear Candy record shop owner John Fleming has learned to adapt to new challenges facing local businesses around Missoula during the pandemic.

But Ear Candy's impact on Missoula goes beyond a record shop and actively contributes to the Missoula music scene by sponsoring shows and releasing music by local artists.
The pandemic introduced new challenges to the shop, forcing Ear Candy to completely shut down for two months. As a result, Fleming focused on expanding his website and online presence to sell vinyl on Discogs, a website similar to eBay for those looking to buy and sell vinyl and CDs.

How Opening a Store During a Pandemic 'Saved' This Milwaukee Business

On March 2, 2020, when the coronavirus pandemic was just beginning to become a major concern in the US, Benny Tralongo signed a lease on a storefront on Milwaukee's East Side.

On that day, Wisconsin had just one confirmed case of COVID-19. But by the time Tralongo got the keys to the storefront on April 1, the state had seen 1,700 cases and Gov. Tony Evers' Safer at Home order had been in effect for a week .

Faced with a situation flush with uncertainty, Tralongo cautiously opened his store, SayWerd—which sells both original and vintage clothing and collectibles—for private appointments in May 2020. He had a grand opening a little over a month later in June.

Off the Beaten Path: Beekman 1802 Mercantile

SHARON SPRINGS, N.Y. ( NEWS10 ) – Tucked away in Schoharie County is the one and only storefront for this major beauty company. Without Sharon Springs, Beekman 1802 wouldn’t be the company it is today.

Beekman 1802 was born when Josh Kilmer-Purcell and Dr. Brent Ridge moved to the historic Beekman Farm . There they found a tightknit community and 100 goats looking for a home.

One act of kindness later and a few goat milk soap trials at the kitchen table later, Beekman 1802 is one of the largest independent skincare companies in the country.
