The back-to-school shopping season will be a ‘dud’ one analyst says, but the NRF is

One analyst is forecasting a back-to-school bust this year, as uncertainty around whether COVID-19 will prevent students from going to class suppresses sales during the second largest shopping season of the year.

Colleges and school districts are slowly announcing their plans for the new semester, with some offering classes in person, and others offering e-learning from home or some combination of the two.

Parents, unsure about what exactly the situation will be, are likely to hold off on the usual back-to-school shopping spree, experts and analysts say.

This may worth something:

LA’s Kickback is a social shopping app that converts users into marketing channels through

Now he’s using that knowledge to launch Kickback on iOS and Android . It’s invite-only at this point, but the idea is that it uses companies’ marketing budgets to create shopping rewards and incentives for app users. In the same way that Markett turned college students into advocates for apps like Uber and Lyft, Kickback will turn shoppers into brand ambassadors through its app.

It was only a matter of time before an American company tried to copy its success. Kickback — like most new apps these days — is invite-only.

Sixteen states will hold sales tax holidays to help families get ready for the upcoming school year. The savings, which are usually on clothes and school supplies, are open to all.

Alabama's three-day holiday is first, kicking off Friday. Mississippi and Tennessee will start their annual holidays July 31. Thirteen other states offer tax-free shopping in stores and online in August, most on the first weekend of the month.

Walmart says shoppers must wear masks inside its stores starting Monday — the largest retailer to join a growing list of companies making face covering mandatory across the nation.

"Shopping in a store is a privilege, not a right," the retail trade group NRF said in a statement on Wednesday. "If a customer refuses to adhere to store policies, they are putting employees and other customers at undue risk."

What's next for the Sopris Shopping Center?

While rezoning Carbondale Center Place, LLC seemed like a no brainer, the long-term plans for the property gave trustees pause on July 14. The property currently hosts the Sopris Shopping Center and Sopris Self Storage: two different uses in different zone districts. The proposal before the board — and already backed by the Planning and Zoning Commission — would have allowed a new plat to split the lot, with mixed use zoning on the west side and commercial transitional to the east.
