Appalachian offers all-renewable electricity to its customers — for a price | Business Local |

Two years ago, Appalachian Power Co. offered a deal to its customers: For an extra $4.25 a month, all of their electricity would come from wind, water and sunlight.

The idea, the company said, was to promote more buy-in to renewable energy, whether it comes from wind turbines atop mountain ridges, water flowing from reservoirs or arrays of solar panels in fields and pastures.

So far, about 200 customers have signed up for the voluntary program. Appalachian says it is pleased with that number, although interest slowed in the second year, likely because of the coronavirus pandemic.

AT&T, Verizon Push Free iPhones for Long-Term Customers - WSJ

AT&T kicked off the trend in October by offering high-end smartphones such as the iPhone 12 free with an eligible trade-in device. Its discount later dropped to $700, which covers the entire price of an iPhone 12 Mini and most of a standard iPhone 12, among other gadgets.

Verizon followed suit on Tuesday, dangling trade-in credits of $700 toward new iPhones and $800 toward high-end Android phones. Both companies' most generous offers require that customers stick with an unlimited data plan for a set time.

Heat wave a win for both customers and owners of ice cream shops | INFORUM

MOORHEAD — Just before opening the Moorhead Freez for the day on Saturday, June 5, owner Jessica Malvin donned the vendor hat as she made shakes and dipped bars and bananas in chocolate, keeping each one as cold as can be in the near 100-degree heat.

"It stays cooler in here before we open, so (the treats don't) melt as fast," Malvin said. "It's one of the key reasons why we try to come in early and try to get as much done as we can."

On top of freezing the treats, Malvin said she's also still dealing with effects from the pandemic, making her have some trouble meeting customer demand.

Bay Area-based cannabis company offering 1-cent products to vaccinated customers | KRON4

A Richmond-based medical cannabis company announced this week that it will offer select product for one cent when customers show their valid COVID-19 vaccination card.

The promotion is an effort to help Contra Costa County further increase its vaccination progress, according to 7 Stars Holistic Healing Center, and is available to anyone who has received at least one vaccine dose.

In particular, 7 Stars hopes to help the county reach underserved areas that may not have equitable access to the vaccine.

Downed power line knocks out power to 650 MEC customers

CASSOPOLIS, Mich. — Around 650 customers are without power as a result of a downed AEP power line that feeds one of Midwest Energy & Communications' substations, according to MEC.

MEC says Covert, Bangor, Coloma and Watervliet Townships are the primary locations impacted by the outage.

Please forgive this apparently tangential meandering, but when you've been used to something being done a certain way, it's often hard to imagine a successful alternative.

Yet here we are -- or, more precisely, here are a lot of people in Chicago -- about to face one of the more severe inevitabilities of our modern world: McDonald's is removing humans from taking your order at the drive-thru, in favor of a machine.

I've always been filled with anticipation at how cheery a greeting I'll get when I ride up to the drive-thru speaker. Now, were I in Chicago, I may be greeted by one of Siri's distant cousins, artificial and allegedly intelligent.

New escape room helps customers relive Teton Dam disaster 45 years after it happened - East Idaho

REXBURG – Floodwaters are rushing your way and will engulf you and your town in 25 minutes unless you can solve the clue to prevent it from happening.

That’s the premise of the Teton Dam Evacuation Escape room, which opened in Rexburg Saturday on the 45th anniversary of the Teton Dam flood.

Staff members at the Musem of Rexburg created the experience, which is designed to help people relive what happened that day while having fun at the same time.

COVID-19 Vaccine Passport Ban for Customers Awaits Texas Governor's Signature | The Texan

Senate Bill (SB) 968 from Sen. Lois Kolkhorst (R-Brenham) would address many of the concerns raised during the COVID-19 pandemic and was widely supported by both Republicans and Democrats in the House and Senate.

Among its provisions, SB 968 places a ban on COVID-19 "vaccine passports" — both from governmental entities that could not issue any "standardized documentation to certify an individual's COVID-19 vaccination status" for any purpose beyond health care and from business that "may not require a customer to provide any documentation certifying the customer's COVID-19 vaccination or post-transmission status."
